Hey all! Ran a little today. Had problems with HR strap at first and ran faster for a change, but then fixed it and ran slow again to the coast and back to tutor. Cloudy and rain on the way. :-(

How long have you been running? I got really into running last year, then gained a lot of weight back and found it painful to run. I am trying to ease back into it, but it is rather unpleasant when you have this much extra weight to haul around! I am looking forward to enjoying it again.

RisingAboveIt, I can relate to your post yesterday about feeling self-conscious running. Not sure why you feel that way, but I was sure people were going to look at me and think I had no business running. If you look at my avatar you can see my before photo. I would go to the track very early in the morning and pray nobody else would be there or would even drive by. Then I started running from my house, but again very early. And I didn't have a background in running - had never been athletic - so I was pretty much a hot, sweaty, hard-breathing mess. One day I finally decided if anyone looked at me and didn't think I should be running then they were the problem, not me.

Laura6887, I feel self-conscious when I go running because I was really close to my goal weight last year when I was really into running. I got down to 147 (goal is 130-135). Now I am close to 200 pounds, and it is a totally different experience! I get winded so fast, I can feel every extra pound. I guess I am so embarrassed about gaining all that weight back, and I don't feel like a "real" runner because of it. I need to get over it and just get out there.

I started running nearly two years ago (April 2013). Seems like maybe Laura and I began around the same time, even if we weren't connected on MFP yet. My story's a little like Laura's. I was self conscious, but I also felt very fragile about running. I couldn't dare to just put one foot in front of the other. I had decided I wanted to be a runner the previous year and had bought gear, and then proceeded to walk and walk and walk, never getting the nerve up to run. I wasn't sure when my psyche would agree to it, so I just waited. Then one day I thought I'd run the downhill portion of the park, to see if it hurt my shins (always got shin splints as a girl). So I started to run a few meters and didn't stop! I ran a couple laps that day. Then walking home a couple times, I ran across a hwy crossing, and again...didn't stop, just kept running. I gradually started running. Then I thought I couldn't do it because I'd always give up, thought I couldn't do it. But I was running a half mile loop at the park. One day I tried outside the park (found route on walkjogrun website) and I <3 loved <3 it. Turns out the park was just too boring for me which was the real reason I always gave up. But, fwiw, the park was great because there were all types running there of every age and size, and everyone either kept to themselves or were very congenial, so it helped me to not be self conscious. But also people on the street have helped at pivotal times, with a smile or a nod or even a "you doin good!". It helps when you're trying to get up a long hill, lol! I've had lots of starts and stops since then, for travel and ankle problems, but still love it. I probably need to lose about 30lbs (I'm ~5'9") and I can really feel it sometimes. It's one of the big motivations for losing weight--to run more lightly! Even 20lbs would really make a difference for me right now, but whether I lose or not, I'll keep running. I'm hooked. ;-) Hope you can find your stride again. :-)

I signed up for a Spinning class at 6 AM tomorrow morning (Friday). I am posting about it here to hold myself accountable to actually get up and go to it!

This evening after work I will do some strength training.

My journey was a little more structured. I first did C25K in the summer of 2012. Finished the 9 weeks and for "graduation" ran the course of a 5K race I had walked earlier that summer that was near my house. It took me 51 minutes, but I jogged every slow step. And then I quit running. In February 2013 I hired a personal trainer, in May 2013 I started C25K again and in August 2013 ran my first 5K race. After C25K I did 5K-to-10K, and after a few months of slowly building up mileage I registered & trained for a half marathon, which I ran June 2014. Right now I'm registered & training for the full marathon of that same race.

My heaviest ever was 252 (I'm only 5'2"). I was about 240 when I did C25K the first time. I was down to 210 when I did it the second time. I weighed 150 the day of my half. I dropped another 10 pounds after that, then put 15 back on, so I'm now in the process of chipping that back off again. Was 150.5 this morning. First goal is just to get back into the 140s. Not entirely sure where I need to be on race day but probably 135-140. I will have to back off on my strength training as we get closer to race day so some of what I lose will likely be muscle (which stinks because I've worked hard for that, dang it).

Did 7 minutes on the bike tonight then Jason was running early so we got in our session. After that he had me do 33 more minutes on the bike to get to 40 minutes of cardio.

Can't wait to hear about your spin class RAI!
