We here in Austin are dealing with an ugly stomach bug. Three days in and dehydration is kicking my butt worse than the nausea, trotts, and vomiting. Doc says do sweet tea with real sugar, Gatorade, or water with sugar and salt mixed in..... Even dried ginger has tons of carbs. Any hints for stomach settling on low carb??!

Follow your Dr's orders.... Once feeling good go back on LC...0

Real sugar would make me sick at this point. Try chicken or beef broth. They also make sugar-free Powerade (Powerade Zero). Also diet gingerale (Hansen's is good if you can find it).0

Could you have someone pick up some ginger root for you? It has carbohydrates but you wouldn't be consuming a large amount. I've never really heard of a doctor recommending drinking sugar drinks for stomach sickness. Is he doing this because he knows you're in ketosis, which can lead to dehydration itself, and the sugar will kick you out of it? I don't have a clue how many carbs bitters has but that's the direction we always went for stomach stuff. Basically though, you're not looking to remove aches, you need something to rehydrate, right? Hrmm... thinking... I vote broth, water and peppermint tea. Clearly I'm not a doctor haha.0

Ok let me see if I have this right... You got sick... Then you went to a Doctor, a person with years of schooling. A person who knows you and the sicknesses in your area... He tells you what you need to do to to recover from your sickness....
Then you reject his advice to ask a bunch of strangers on the internet their advice???0 -
lemon ginger tea. seltzer water.
Amodium A-D
I have a touch myself but managed some creamed spinach. Homeade: Cream Cheese, butter and a touch of heavy cream. Thinking I can keep it.
Low cal day for sure.

PS. Doctors are not always right. They are also human.
also this: Interesting NPR interview on sugar. What a shock to hear doctors say it is ok for you "in moderation." Sugar in take in this country is out of control. What is moderation? No one says.
Doctors use to use use blood suckers. Medicine evolves. We learn.
Remember, they crucified Atkins' research. And now? They know sugar is a link to cancer.

Try to re-hydrate and replenish lost electrolytes. Tummy bugs strip all the electrolytes from your body. Sports drinks are the best. Chemists also sell a powdered mix you add to water. There are zero calorie sports drinks available but if I were this ill I would just be intent on replenishing those lost electrolytes and to hell with the sugar for a little while.
Also try some soft scrambled or boiled eggs. You don't need to add cream or anything if it's too much for your stomach to handle at the moment. I also vote broth.0 -
Real homemade bone broth, and tea made from boiling ginger root. Your body doesn't need sugar when it's feeling down already.0

If you can't keep ANYTHING down, your body might need the calories in the sugar. That said, broth and unsweetened tea, try ginger tea, is good. Perhaps some mio fit for electrolytes.0

I forgot to mention in my last post. This was advice given by a health care professional when one of my kids was ill. Electrolytes are key.0

Sugar and too many sports drinks (must alternate or cut each with water) will INCREASE the trotts, as you put it. No idea why a doctor would EVER tell you that. Electrolytes without sugar (no-carb sports drinks), I don't have experience with, as I could never tolerate them well before this WOE, so I don't know if those have the same effect as pedialyte/gatorade...0 -
What I do for myself and my family when we are nauseated is put a few drops of peppermint oil into some hot tea or just water and sip on that. I did that for morning sickness as well..no sugar in peppermint oil0

For nausea, we usually drink peppermint tea with raw honey. Chicken broth heated for meals and the added sodium/electrolytes. The only carbs then are from the honey, but since its also a natural antibiotic, its worth it.0

Thanks to all of you that replied in a suggesting helpful manner. I ended up in the hospital with IV fluids. Nasty stomach bug going around here. I got home last night and have been alternating ginger tea and peppermint tea (I'm sure my Granddaddy would call it scared water as there isn't a whole lot of tea in it!!).0

Oh no! I hope you're on the mend now. Do you know how I get people to not recommend sugar? I tell them I realized this winter that I get very sick from sugar and break out. It's not not true. I let them assume an allergy of some variety. But I find that people are more accepting of this WOE if they think you have to do it to feel better. Anyway, your doctor might call BS on that. Thanks for the reminder of why it's so important to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate through sickness and in health. A marriage to water0

Thanks again everyone for the well wishes and helpful suggestions. I am feeling better right now but we will be leaving soon for my weekly torture so we shall see how it goes. Sipping ginger and peppermint and eating ice chips trying to get my levels back up. All will be well.0
