In app calorie counter

Options
Hey,

I just have a question about the in-app calorie counter. I know these things are nowhere near exact, but I'd like to gain a better idea of how good it is.

The app says I burned about 170 cals on Day 1 week 1, while my treadmill says I burnt 50cals, this is quite a large disparity and I'm not sure which one to lean towards. IDK on what information C25K bases it on, but my treadmill knows my speeds and occasionally my pulse.

A little help for someone trying get a realistic grasp of what's happening?

I use this list here for swimming: https://sites.google.com/site/compendiumofphysicalactivities/Activity-Categories/running and it seems to be very accurate in my case. Thus I'm using it for running/walking as well. At the moment I'm only logging my calories as walking as I'm still walking for more than 50% (there's a page for walking there as well). This is far lower than what my app tells me. Today I logged 38 minutes of brisk walking and got around 180kcal while my app tells me I burned 244.

Using this list requires a bit of calculating though. You need your BMR per minute (it's given per 24 hours) times your workout length in minutes times the activity factor minus your BMR per minute times workout length in minutes.

I checked my speeds and times at them, then added them separately (like the app had while assuming my speed) and it brough it down a bit, but I have no idea what is a reasonable amount :P

Using METs (calories = METS * weight(kg) * time(hrs) I actually got a higher amount at about 200 cals, so maybe I should just stick the with app/adjusting the speeds it assumes I reach to those I actually achieved - it does time my changes for me.

I think 100 calories per mile is a reasonable estimate. I've always just logged whatever the app said, but I try not to eat back all the exercise calories to compensate.
