OK, this is completely new to me, but apparently it's old news. Anybody here drinking vinegar?

Vinegar Improves Insulin Sensitivity to a High-Carbohydrate Meal in Subjects With Insulin Resistance or Type 2 Diabetes

http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/27/1/281.full

These data indicate that vinegar can significantly improve postprandial insulin sensitivity in insulin-resistant subjects.

Mechanism of action:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24867606

These results suggest that TVB prevents visceral obesity and insulin resistance via AMPK/PPARα-mediated fatty acid and glucose oxidation.

I'm not IR that I know of but I've been taking a teaspoon of ACV each morning, after coffee with HWC, for about a week. So this looks as if I would have more benefit taking the ACV with/before a meal?

My husband does. I did for a while and lost a few pounds pretty quickly, but then kinda got tired of it. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

I've been adding Bragg's ACV after hearing about it. Here is Jason Fung on ithttp://intensivedietarymanagement.com/the-benefits-of-vinegar-hormonal-obesity-xxviii/

From the Diabetes Journal link: " thus, vinegar may possess physiological effects similar to acarbose or metformin"

Amazing - very good information, thanks for sharing @wabmester‌ !

I've heard about ACV helping with blood sugar but have never been brave enough to try, lol. I suppose I could mix in with water and drink it that way. Or I could start mixing it with my salad oil.

Sugarbeat, I just put a little bit, maybe half a teaspoon, in my water bottle. It gives it a nice tang without being too overwhelming.

Busy day and may not have time to check out the information till tomorrow. Just wondering if the kind of vinegar is important. I have a variety of them. Thanks for sharing this information!

Although it seems that apple cider vinegar gets talked about the most,, I'm not certain why that is, at this point. Maybe someone else knows? At quick glance only a couple of the abstracts Fung links to mention the type of vinegar - one white vinegar and one apple cider (ACV). My guess is as long as you limit balsamic, all vinegar is good??.... Definitely something to look into!

We use ACV unfiltered or with 'The Mother' for our chickens to help their digestion and keep stuff from growing in their water. So Maybe I should try it too?

One swig for the chickens, one swig for me. It is a swig, swig pass party :)

Why limit balsamic? That would be my first choice.

    http://www.fitnessrxwomen.com/nutrition/healthy-eating-tips/apple-cider-vinegar-vs-balsamic/

As long as there's acetic acid, it should be good.

Ah, could be. The vinegar seems to reduce the blood sugar response even in a carb-laden meal, but there's still no reason to push your luck.

Good point and the carb laden meal so a few sugars are likely insignificant. Balsamic is far yummier and may lead to more usage. Worth a try, and as the article you found pointed out, it has the resveratrol benefits.

I put ACV in the cat's water fountain deal, just a little bit. Helps the one who used to suffer urinary tract infections (badly, multiple times). Of course, we've also switched them to half good canned food and half good dry food, vs say Purina, so there is that.

The main thing that has been studied is the acetic acid. If all you're going for is what's been shown in the studies by acetic acid, then the vinegar doesn't matter.

Some "natural news" types of sources have mentioned that ACV is superior because it has higher levels of the nutrients from the apples (especially compared to, say, white vinegar, which generally comes from corn and is distilled), though the USDA says there aren't any measurable levels of them (though was that filtered, commercial ACV, or raw? Does that make a difference? Was it even ACV, or just "vinegar"? I don't know. I don't know that anyone has actually done a comparison and tested raw unfiltered recently, someone else might know, though). Additionally, there may be phytochemicals we haven't "discovered" yet that are part of what makes it so awesome. The raw, unfiltered variety of any vinegar, at least, still has the probiotics that created the vinegar to begin with, so there is that. They also favor ACV for things like hair and beauty because of a different acidity/pH level. I haven't verified the validity of that, though.

DH and I use the Bragg apple cider vinegar (raw, unfiltered, with the mother). It is a "live" probiotic food as others have said. We mix about 1.5 tablespoons in a cup of cold water. I also add some berry flavored liquid stevia. I drink with a straw to avoid contact with the tooth enamel as much as possible, then rinse my mouth with water afterwards. Ideally I would do this 2-3 time a day, but I haven't used it in quite a while.

Funny thing... My grandmother used to drink a large serving soon of ACV every morning. That spoon must have been close to 4 tablespoons... When I asked her why she did that... She would say... Its good fer what ails you... I guess all these years later she was right. Oh ya... She died on her 96th birthday hit while she was walking by a drunk driver.

This discussion intrigues me. I never was a "oil & vinegar" salad eater. So if I want to make up a lettuce salad with Oil & Vinegar...

I could use, "Bragg apple cider vinegar" (if I can find it) & what kind of oil? Light tasting Olive oil, coconut, etc?

And what ratio of oil and vinegar?

Thank you for any consideration you may give me,

But what does this do to the enamel on your teeth if you take it regularly? I would think it erodes your tooth enamel. Wouldn't drinking it from a straw still affect the tender tissues of your throat and mouth? Not trying to be difficult, but I don't want to create new health problems.. lol

I use an old multipurpose squeeze bottle and do half olive oil and half balsamic. Just shake real good and squirt. I'm not great at measurements but this ratio tastes good to me.

Good point. I think that if you take it right before your meal you would get the benefit of lowered BS & insulin without leaving the acetic acid on your teeth to erode enamel.

I take hot honey & lemon water first thing in the morning, then brush my teeth, then have coffee or tea. That way the lemon doesn't erode my tooth enamel. I have heard about people seeing that erosion if they drink lemon water and don't rinse their mouth afterward. Probably the same for vinegar.

Thanks for this thread. I'm going to try this. Ever little bit helps.

I found Bragg's online. They limit the vinegar to two 16oz bottles. To get it shipped to Michigan, it's $15! Not gonna pay that much. Does anyone know if I can buy it at a store? Trader Joes? GNC? Whole Foods???

I do like the idea that's it has probiotics and other good stuff, but I need it to be cheeper that that.

I will go buy some Balsalmic in the mean time. Thank you MeBeep!

    Bits and pieces about vinegar

I think balsamic vinegar is carbier than other vinegar. Ofc, I used to like it better on salads. I often put a tbs of acv on avocados with pepper and salt as a snack. Vinegar is often used to cut through heavy dishes, giving them a more balanced taste.

I wonder if although all the white rice the japanese eat as sushi, the effect is lower because some of it is resistant starch and sushi rice is seasoned with both sugar and plenty of vinegar. Plus the ginger is pickled as well.

Yes, I think the ACV Fung recommends is the unrefined with the Mother.

Totally off topic of food: If you have workout clothes that "stink", wash them with some 7% table vinegar. It removes funky anaerobic, keto-ish workout smells.

The straw as well as rinsing your mouth helps with the tooth enamel. I dilute with quite a bit of water (1.5 tablespoons of ACV per 8 oz. water) so the final product is quite a bit lower percentage of acidity than the ACV straight, so I personally am not concerned about affect on any other mouth/throat tissues.

I can find the Bragg in the health food section of my local grocery store. I buy a gallon at a time, it is shelf-stable for years. Any natural food co-op or Whole Foods type place should have it or a similar product as well. There are other brands that are raw ACV with the mother. Doesn't have to be Bragg specifically.

    Other brands:
    • Spectrum Naturals Organic Apple Cider Vinegar Unfiltered
    • Heinz Unfiltered All Natural Apple Cider Vinegar
    • Eden Foods Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
    • Trader Joe's Organic Pasteurized Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (from Trader Joe's obviously, but you can also buy on Amazon)

The usual ratio for oil and vinegar dressing is 2 parts oil, 1 part vinegar. If you're not used to vinegar, start slowly and add to taste so you don't ruin your salad.
