Bento Boxes

There is a discussion on the main Recipe forum about Bento Boxes and I have gotten into them! Is there anyone here that does this?

    @cindytw; I love bento lunches or any other meal for that matter. Great portion control and if done right they are nutritious too. I've done tons of research over a 10 year time span of various Asian cuisines and will share some of it if you like. Just let me know :smiley:

    @aleahcim; bentos are fairly easy and depending on where you the ingredients can be as authentic as you want them to be. Rice is always 1/3 of the ingredients or box (bento means box in Japanese). Then 1/3 or less protein and 1/3 or more fruit/veggies. For nutritional balance they make sure the foods are varied and use colors. Each box should have: Red/Green, Yellow/Orange, White/black/brown.

    I don't follow traditional rules, i just make them pretty and use the idea of making them pretty and appealing. I cant have rice so i fill with veggies, fruits and nuts, and eggs.

    From the pic you posted it looks very colorful and yummy. I feel that the color rules are for appeal and nutrition. At least that's what I was told by a Japanese friend of mine before she moved again.........hubby was a Marine. I just love that they eat really good food that's cheap. I spend less eating Asian style, not just bentos, than the traditional meals I grew up with.
