But marathons are great because you get to run slower than in a half or a 10k!

This is exactly why I prefer marathons. I'm lazy. Running fast hurts. Ok, running far hurts too... But it's not the same :)

I think only a runner would get this, but, yeah, I agree!

Now this is encouraging! I am also lazy, just hope it hurts less than running fast.

Everything hurts less than running fast. Everything.

Just kidding. You'll be sore for a week after a marathon.

It doesn't hurt less, it hurts different.

It doesn't hurt at all except afterwards. But that's a sort of 'passive' pain where it already hurts but there's nothing you can do about it except avoid going down stairs. Racing a 5k you have to actively push yourself to run at an uncomfortable pace (but it doesn't hurt afterwards).

I play rest days by ear. Sometimes I'll go 2 weeks without one, or only run 2 miles on a "rest" day. I have found, now that I'm used to high mileage, that if I am unable to run for a couple of days and then run again, I am more excited about it than normal and often have a really great run.
Some use rest days to avoid burn out as much as they do for preventing injury.
