Rest days from running

STrooper, yes I agree. Some people have told me a full marathon is not double a half but feels like triple a half. I have no idea how it feels to run more than a half distance, but hope to find out when upping my miles slowly.
Mile 1 to 12. "Wow, this is really easy"
Mile 12 to 16. "mmmm, this is getting harder, but no problem"
Mile 18. "grrrr, what moron talked me into doing this, oh yeah, that was me"
Mile 20. "I hate life"
Mile 25. "I wonder if anyone would notice if I just crawled off into the bushes and went to sleep?"
Mile 26.2. "Yaaaaaay, and Never again"
One week later. "I'm signing up for another one"

You forgot the part about the sadist who chose all those hills in the course.0 -
But marathons are great because you get to run slower than in a half or a 10k!0

Thanks for the warning and I have just started training for one...0 -
Embrace the negative split mentality
miles 1-12: slow down, go slower, chat, have a conversation, be comfy
mile 12-16: ok, enough of this slow stuff (wanted to put another word here). let's hit the gas peddle a little
mile 18: oh yeah, less than a Tuesday run to go!
mile 20: warm up is over. 10k race time. Let's do this!
mile 25: fastest miles time, leave it all on the road!
mile 26.2: that was awesome!0 -

Now this is encouraging! I am also lazy, just hope it hurts less than running fast.

Everything hurts less than running fast. Everything.
Just kidding. You'll be sore for a week after a marathon.0 -

It doesn't hurt less, it hurts different.0 -
It doesn't hurt at all except afterwards. But that's a sort of 'passive' pain where it already hurts but there's nothing you can do about it except avoid going down stairs. Racing a 5k you have to actively push yourself to run at an uncomfortable pace (but it doesn't hurt afterwards).0

I play rest days by ear. Sometimes I'll go 2 weeks without one, or only run 2 miles on a "rest" day. I have found, now that I'm used to high mileage, that if I am unable to run for a couple of days and then run again, I am more excited about it than normal and often have a really great run.
Some use rest days to avoid burn out as much as they do for preventing injury.0 -
I used has Gideon training plan for first marathon it worked well 5 days out of seven with 1 tapered long run0
