How Fast Did You Make Progress?

Hey there y'all,

I started running (from a very sedentary, BMI ~26ish lifestyle) around Aug/Sept last year. I made really good progress running about 3 times a week as much as I could (usually 2 or 3 km), and eventually did my first treadmill 5k in 30 mins end of November.

I took a long break (no illness or anything, just circumstance) of 2 months and restarted, and now after 2 or 3 months I'm almost back to where I was before. Why!? I thought I should be much more improved than then. Even now, when I do 5K I'm dying! Why is 5K such a challenge, when people around are doing 10K, 15K, and marathons?! How much training did it take to get there, and how much progress did you see from month to month? Part of me is thinking that I'm setting my bar low and not pushing myself which is why I'm not making such progress.

Very fast! From week 4 on I always did something extra, often doubling the programme of the day. From week 6 one I've been constantly working out for more than 5km. My last run ended up at 6.7km :o I'm the girl who, in her whole school career could not run more than 100m, regardless of the speed. I guess that gives me some extra motivation.

However, I've been doing fast circuit type bodyweight workouts for almost a year already. I suppose I got some fitness from those

June 15 2014 could not run for any period of time, did C25k.
    Ran 1st 5k 29 July 2014 34:37
    Finished C25k 5 Aug 32:24
    Finished B210k 20 Sep 61:41
    Started HM training programme
    1st 5k under 30 mins 20 Sep 29:51
    1st 10k under an hour 29 Nov 58:50
    Silverstone HM 15 March 2015 2:06:03
    Started 2nd HM training cycle
    Latest 5k 4 April 2015 25:50

Current training load is between 25 and 40 miles per week depending on whether it is a stretching or resting week. Next HM is 17 May (running a race), 28 June (racing a race)

Biggest improvement for me came from time on feet and then implementing Matt Fitzgeralds 80/20 plan

    Have fun
