Hello everyone

I have only just started my low carb diet but previously (and only briefly) tried Atkins and Dukan. So I am still new at this low carb dieting thing. Anyway, My husband decided today that he wanted to be on the low carb diet too. so we had a lunch with jalepeno poppers, with a mexican style ground beef and cheese (i had made chips from almond flour so we could have had low carb nachos but these didn't turn out).

Anyway, i typed what we ate into both our fitness pals and we have had 1,000 calories in this one meal. I have only used 10g of carbs but this seems a lot of calories in one meal.

so my questions are 1. what are other peoples calorie in take or does it only matter about the grams of carbs per day? how many grams of carbs are others doing in one day?

2. Also My husband wants a chocolate mini roll (in america they are similar to little debbie's hoho's). but they are 15grams of carbs in one. Can he have one as its a first day on this diet as long as he stays under 20-30 grams? or are they any good recipes that you can recommend so he can avoid this sweet temptation?

thanks in advanced

I would say that in your first week, just think about your carbs and don't worry about calories - the water weight will come off anyway if you are keeping carbs v low. When you have adjusted to the WOE then you can think about cals. IMHO you can eat more cals on this WOE to lose weight than other WOE, the way I keep my cals reasonable is to eat just 2 meals a day and try and do 16:8 fasting so I don't eat from 8pm at night to midday the next day (sometimes if I'm hungry I'll have 10 almonds to keep me going though, so I don't always manage that). This means I can have a 1000cal meal if that's how it works out.

Re your husband's chocolate mini roll - makes some chocolate tasting fat bombs - loads of recipes on line and that can be his sweet treat!

    Good luck!

For me, it helped if I stepped my carbs down instead of going full out deprivation.

So I started at 75-100g, next week went to 50 ish, third week to the 50-30 range, 4th week to 30 or lower.

now that I'm in the 30 range, if one day I decide to have my HoHo at 15 g ... well having 45 g for the day isn't going to kill me ;-)

Pre-planning meals for the week is also a good idea. I try to spread my calories evenly across the day. and squeeze in some protein snacks since I tend to eat dinner later in the day (bigger spread of time between lunch and dinner than breakfast and lunch)

I agree, worry about getting your carbs down and using fat to keep the hungries and the flu away. Remember to keep your sodium levels up as well. When I first took the plunge into LCHF my calories were between 2500-3000+ due to the added fat. I did it that way to get my system used to lower carbs. Now my calories vary between 1500-2000 almost without effort. The calories often take care of themselves once your body adapts. Not always, though, so if you notice a stall you might want to track.

and remember he's probably going to need more calories and protein than you are. When my husband does the LC with me, a recipe that I used to get 4 meals out of, turns into three (2 dinners, one lunch for me) to make sure he gets enough protein.

That really helps. I like the idea of reducing his carbs gradually. that will help him out big time. I also like to pre-plan meals but at the moment, I'm clueless on what to make, so I'm lucky if i an plan for a day at a time rather than weekly meals.

I'm just doing a bit of pintrest-ing for some recipes. I didn't even know almond flour or coconut oil existed until now .....says something about my lack of cooking knowledge. yikes. but we are definitely determined this time around. Thanks again for the advice :)
