Questions about 920xt

I love my 920xt that I have had for about 2 months or so now but I find it isn't very actuate.
It is always off on my swims. Really frustrating as part of the reason I got it was so I wouldn't have to keep track of my laps. It is usually over by 75-150 meters on a 1000 meter swim. I'm guessing it's user error. Any ideas or suggestions on what I might be doing to cause this I am a new swimmer trying to build up my speed and technique but I do rest for a brief couple of seconds at the end of each lap to catch my breath.
On the runs it is always way off on my pace. Any ideas? I usually run on the treadmill a couple times a week but I get a 1-2 mile outdoor run in usually every week. I had heard garmin uses outdoor runs to calibrate and it can take awhile. Well I've done about 6 outdoor runs with it and a sprint Tri. Shouldn't it have calibrated by now?
As far as the bike speed and distance that all seems right on target. ☺
I have a guy coaching me through training peaks and it seems half pointless to use this and sync my workouts if half the data is off and I have to constantly go in and edit notes.
I was looking at getting the Fenix 3 but it wasn't released yet when I got this and I wanted it for training for my upcoming sprint at the time. The luck I am having with the 920xt I'm kinda wishing I had waited although according to REI I can return it within the year.

I'm not sure. I've had mine since December and I have never had an issue. The only problem with swim distance recording I've ever had is me not hitting the lap button correctly to record intervals.
When you say the pace is off for running, is that based on the treadmill as well?0 -
For the swimming - make sure every time you turn at the wall you give a good push off. The 920 (and the 910 and Garmin Swim) use the accelerometer to decide when you turn. It is looking for a sharp acceleration on pushoff. You don't have to really shove hard, but make sure the kick off the wall is "obvious". If you are stopping at the wall, you should probably hit the lap button to pause the swim timer though. That is sure to confuse it.
As for running indoors, mine seems to sometimes be spot-on accurate and sometimes wildly off (like it will tell me I am running 6:00 pace when I am actually at 7:00). Honestly I just ignore what it tells me - when I am done my run, the data uploads and then I go into Training Peaks and manually change the distance to be what my treadmill reports, then note in the comments that the splits are to be ignored since they were treadmill splits.
I think the 920 is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I am never without it now and it is my regular watch0 -
3dogsrunning, yes I mainly see the biggest pace difference when on the treadmill.
Glevinso, I would think making sure I give a good push off would be to make sure it is not under recording my laps, it is over recording my laps by 75-150 meters. Weird! Right? I guess I could pause it but man was a pita.
I'm finding my treadmill runs way, way off! Like I'm doing a 13:00 pace and it says I'm doing an 8:00. I need my splits to be accurate so the coach can be looking over my progress.
I'm guessing it's time to just make a call to garmin. I hate troubleshooting over the phone with people. Lol.0 -

Yeah if it was slight, I would suggest possibly an error with the treadmill, they can be off too. But I am pretty sure you would know the difference between 8m/m and 13m/m.
THe upside is Garmin are very good to deal with customer service wise.

stupid question, but could it be possible you have it setup for yards and are swimming meters? That could overstate results.0

Do you ever stop mid-lap? Or pause for any reason? The watch is looking for a "break" in the usual pattern, followed by an acceleration, to decide when it switches lengths. One time I was stopped in the middle of the pool by some clown who was walking across the pool and I ran into him. After a quick earful about WTF he was doing there, I kept swimming. The watch recorded an extra length because I had stopped and restarted0
