New here and sitting at work.

Hi, I'm Gabinka. I am a help desk technician. Been one since 1999. So lots of sitting. And often, I'll go home and sit, too. But I did get a nice change recently. I got to move to small, closed suite. Just 2 cubicles and my desk behind them. But there's open, unused space behind my desk. So far I've been using it to do some exercises with small (2lb) walking weights. I kind of wander around while I do. Yesterday, I did some karate kicks and blocks. I hope to do tai chi here eventually. Maybe even yoga. There is a gym in the building which I do hope to use soon. But up here, I want to do small, not-so-sweaty exercises. 6 minutes with those weights. 7 minutes with karate, etc.

It sounds like your doing really well I sit as at a desk all day, working in a hospital. There is no space for exercise or even a gym I wish there was. I just have to wait to get off work before I can work out. Keep up the hard work.0

I went to the gym downstairs yesterday. Did 32 minutes on the treadmill, averaging 3.3 mph. I did get up to 4.0 mph a couple of times but couldn't sustain it due to my shins hurting. Guess I should have stretched first. Gonna stick with the smaller exercises today. I'll probably do the gym again tomorrow.0

Not so great today. My badge doesn't work for the gym so I went to the office. Found out my badge was disactivated by the office where I used to be housed, even though I'm still one of the computer techs. So now I have to get it reactivated before I can use it to get in the gym. Fortunately, one of my coworkers let me borrow his. I did 28 minutes on the treadmill.0

yoga can be nice and easy or you can do strength sort of yoga sequences. You can find lots of videos on line for all different abilities and lengths of time.
the treadmill works too. or going outside and walking around the building.0 -
I do now have a badge and can use the gym again. I just usually don't get to take an hour for lunch anymore (lots of make-up time for other things eat my lunch breaks). So I take smaller breaks and walk around my floor. Each figure-8 gets me about 250 steps. So that's working. I do have a blu-Ray player here so I can do Tai Chi or yoga or even pilates. It's a pretty private office. My coworkers and the mail room person are usually gone by 4 and I don't leave until 6:30.

I had my cube at work configured at work as a standing cube last September. It took me a while but now I only sit down at lunch. No it doesn't burn noticeably more calories but I do notice that I'm more alert, my posture is better and I don't feel the need to sit much after work.0

Standing all day? Not sure if that is the best either.0

No it is supposed to be healthier than sitting.0

You don't need any extra space to make a difference. I stand up.often especially during meetings and do squats over the office chair. I hold onto the edge of the desk and spin the chair slowly to do twist stretches. I walk in place. Sitting down there are side stretches with arm extended then do other side., I lift my legs straight out and see how long I can hold them up. Also interlace fingers, put palms toward ceiling and stretch arms up and back. I use my 2 breaks and lunch to walk. I'd like to do more but I feel like I'm making progress. I put a rubber ball between my back and chair and roll it around for a mini massage. Just keep reminding yourself to move!0
