I heard the way to count your true carbs is to take carbohydrates - fiber, is this true? I've just been trying to stick to carbs straight up. - sing the fiber would give me a lot more freedom lol!

Some do (subtract fiber), I find more success if I don't. It's too easy for carb creep that way. My rule 'o thumb is to try to keep total carbs at or under 20, but if I exceed that occasionally by 10 or so and it's mostly due to additional veggie/fiber carbs, I can live with that. I'd rather keep carbs low and go over on calories w/ fat & protein than the other way around. When I exceed calories AND carbs, no good comes from that. ;-)

Your body, your science experiment...the only way you'll know what's right for YOU is to test the theories and chart your results. Good luck!

I do carbs - fibre. I would have hardly any fibre otherwise.

@minties82 - when you drop the carbs, fiber is not needed. Fiber is one of the added things that you have to have in your body when processing carbs. Fats are naturally lubricating in the waste department, and so fiber is not needed at all, unless you have a pre-existing issue. I have heard of it being helpful for some who are slightly older (less bounce back in the metabolism) and who've eaten the SAD way their whole lives - so their systems have forgotten how to use the system without fats...

But overall, I don't get fiber much except in the occasional veg, and I ALWAYS had poo problems eating any other way. I do not have that problem now...at all. Sorry if that is TMI, but you do not need fiber unless you're using it to get carbs out of your body.

It's because of a difference in food labeling around the world. In the US, fiber is included in the overall number of carbs on labels. In basically the rest of the world, fiber and carbs are two completely different categories that have nothing to do with each other. In the US, if you deduct fiber from carbs, you see the number that the rest of the world sees on their labels. If you're outside the US, and you deduct fiber from carbs, you're miscounting how many carbs you're ingesting.

    US label:

    UK label:
    Weetabix+Organic+nutrition.jpg

Those are for the same cereal, top is the label in the US, bottom is the label in the UK (I know weetabix isn't very applicable to LC, but it's the first thing I could think of that I know is sold in both places)

That's very interesting! I have 3 servings of metamucil a day and it gives me a slight stomach ache feeling all the time. I was having problems in the toilet department (only going once or twice a week, not normal for me) and thought fibre would help. Would save me some money if I could avoid the metamucil :-).

I'd rather eat more fat, sounds good to me!

Definitely give it a whirl. After all, it really can't hurt unless the underlying system is broken... LOL I hope you thoroughly enjoy this experiment! Also, a thought my female doc told me.... caffeine stimulates movement in the bowel, so it can help if there is waste to finish processing.

But remember, as you eat less food in general, and less bulky food, you will naturally visit the toilet less. I'm literally saving half as much toilet paper as I did before I started eating this way. LOL So they say you are not constipated unless there is pain and discomfort and the feeling of being unable to pass what is there, etc. If you go a week, aren't in pain, don't feel like you need to go all the time, etc., it may just be your body adapting.

I used to "go" every single time I used the restroom to pee. Now I go a couple times a day, if that. I know people who go once every 2-3 days - normally. Imagine how their bodies might change eating this way. I know I for one would love to get some of the wasted time back from bathroom troubles!!

I used to go 6 times a day before low carb! Ithought my lack of gallbladder was making me go so often but I still have no gallbladder and don't visit the toilet much.

You are right, I eat a third of what I used to. I never feel constipated. I'll stop the fibre and hopefully the sore tummy feeling also goes away.

    Thanks very much :-)

    How funny! I don't have a gallbladder either. :)

I still find complications have me sprinting to go, but far less so. For example, I don't recommend having coconut oil and pickles/heavy vinegar foods withing 1-2 hours of each other. Instant passage through the body for me! LOL

You can have my avocados when you pry them from my cold, dead hands. Unless they get too squishy first. :p

In which case, they've already squished out if you're holding them with tight a grip.
