Keto "Trail Mix"

I swear, there was a post a while back asking about keto trail mix. Maybe it was in the keto group. I don't know anymore. Anywho, I figured I'd share this. I've been reading about zero carb/all-meat diets and in a few of them, I saw mention of Pemmican, so I looked it up to see exactly what it was. At the time I was reading the thread, I remembered a thing that the Native Americans would take on their hunting trips, but I couldn't remember what it was called. I don't think it was exactly the same as Pemmican, but it was similar.
Anyway, back to the point, I looked it up, and lo and behold, there are recipes for it! In fact, Mark Sisson tops the list and I figured I'd share it for the trail runners and campers around -- http://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-to-make-pemmican
I'm half tempted to make some just to try it, though it might be useful for some camping trips I'm considering going on.

Thanks for the pemmican link. I have been thinking of making some. If I could get Epic bars here I'd give them a try. I'm looking for snacks to pack on a train trip this summer where non-conventional food like mine might be scarce. The train menu will be carb heavy, so I'm worried about not getting enough protein and fat. And I can only eat so many nuts..0

Pretty sure I read Prof Tim Noakes saying that pemmican was what the Native Indians ate when out hunting. I wouldn't make it myself. My excuse is the huge fly population in Australia that would lay their eggs in it while it's drying, but it's just an excuse. Isn't beef jerky similar (and can be purchased instead of painstakingly home-made) anyway? I'm expecting a 'no it's not'
but it's still dried meat.

I may try to make my own beef jerky. Pemmican would just be like beef jerky with some extra fat and berries if you want.0

Commercial jerky is stuffed to the gills with sugar and all kinds of crazy additives.

I was just looking at a package of this at the gas station yesterday, but didn't buy it. I wonder what the natural flavouring is ? The sugar could be from traditionally cured bacon ? This looks better than some, I guess.0

This stuff is a positively nasty copycat of bacon. If you like your beef jerky firm and/or your bacon crispy, do NOT try this. It was the saddest disappointment ever! I will stick to my fried bacon in a bag at room temp, thanks.0 -
It is pretty limp. But I keep it on hand for emergencies when no real bacon is available.0

I read an article a week or two ago that said that "Natural Flavoring" usually includes MSG, even when the packaging says "No MSG" - this is when I started making my own bone broth. I really want to make my own jerky, too. I love beef jerky.
(Anecdote: my husband and I, pre-keto days, were checking out at Target and I grabbed a bag of beef jerky and threw it on the conveyor belt. When the cashier was ringing us out, she looked at me and said, "What is WITH men and their beef jerky?" My husband is pretty easily offended by gender-based generalizations, so man was I proud to look her dead in the eye, and say, flatly, "That's for me." She couldn't come up with anything to say in response.)0 -
I love, love the Oberto Bacon Jerky. It travels very easily in an airline carry on bag or purse for when you dont have time to eat.0

Look up Alton Brown's Beef Jerky recipe/process. Involves box fans and air filters rather than an expensive dehydrator if you don't have one... Pretty interesting!0 -
You can also dry jerky in the oven if your temperature gets low enough. I bought a dehydrator because I like to put away foods, so the investment was well worth it.
This year I plan on dehydrating mushrooms, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, peppers of all kinds and apples for my family. That's not even counting the jerky. Dried sweet and hot peppers made into flakes in a coffee grinder are a fabulous addition to all kinds of spice mixes. My extended family has threatened to steal my stash.
I'm kind of excited to try to powder those berries to make homemade jello without the artificial sweeteners. In fact... I'm suddenly remembering I have some blueberries in the storage already dried....

I don't know about jello, but I've been doing gummies with fruits. Puree it, cook it if needed/desired, add gelatin or pectin and some honey or other sweetener (if desired or needed for pectin or longer storage), pour into molds or on a cookie sheet to set up.
I found a recipe for Twizzlers, too, that looks good, but I haven't gotten the beet juice and date paste yet. (That'd be for my hubby and son; I don't like Twizzlers anyway.) http://nouveauraw.com/raw-recipies/sweet-treats/raw-strawberry-twizzlers/0
