I got the name of the sports medicine doctor from my boss, and called to make an appointment. They said her first opening was Monday, May 4. She works at 4 different branches of their clinic and when I said I had hoped I could get in sooner because I'm running Grandma's Marathon, she checked the other clinics and found the doctor had an opening yesterday afternoon in one of the other locations, which is basically on my way home anyway.

After an exam and an x-ray she thinks I have a possible stress reaction, which is the precursor to a stress fracture. It's right in the middle of my femur. At this point the bone is thicker right there, but it wasn't totally conclusive on the x-ray. She said if the bone is weak the body will generate more bone over it to attempt to protect it. I'm getting an MRI on Tuesday, then see the doctor May 4 to get the results (she's out next week). I'm so glad I got this checked because if that is what's wrong and I had continued to push it, I would have ended up on crutches. Where it stands now it would heal with rest. I could still swim, bike, do Pilates, strength train, but no running and I'm even sure about brisk walking. Will find out from the doctor when I see her next.

In the meantime I am benched from running or anything else that causes it pain. It's possible it really is just a hamstring issue, in which case I'll get some physical therapy and it would in theory still be possible to run my race, but losing 2 weeks of training at this point would be pretty hard to come back from. My longest workout is 14 miles and 4 of those miles were on the elliptical. To miss 2 long runs then have to build up to 26.2 miles in 6 weeks doesn't sound healthy.

Saw my trainer last night & this morning. Did a light workout on the bike last night & got on the rowing machine this morning to warm up, and both felt fine. Jason and I are joking that my upper body is going to be really strong by the time my legs are healed. It will help finding out for sure what's wrong so we know what we can and can't do.

Laura, it sounds like you are on the right track to solving it, I just hope you can be pain free in the mean time. It has certainly made me stop and think and to try to be more aware of what's going on with my body with my running.

Today I did a little warmup run to a local stadium and then some strides and run back. Unfortunately I didn't burn a lot of calories, but it was a good thing to do.

    TGIF y'all!

This cold still clings! But I'm starting to feel at least somewhat normal. Ugh. I totally get what your talking about Marla! I've been having to miss out on training for over a week and I'm going crazy!

As for the make-up and jewelry discussion I missed out on, I don't wear earrings anymore. I've had them pierced and then re pierced twice more. It doesn't matter how long I leave studs in (I once was dutiful to keep studs in every night for well over a year) the second I forget to leave the studs in my ears close...over night. Literally one night. So I gave up. I rarely wear makeup unless going out with my hubby on a big date. I only have a couple pieces of jewelry. I have a necklace with all three of my kids first initials on it, with their birthstones around the edge, and their birthdate's engraved on the back. I wear that and my wedding ring and that's it. With three small kids (and a fourth during the day) that's all I have time for. My hair is really short so I don't have to do anything with that either. I am pretty low maintanence. ;)

I'm a bit stressed about the coming week. Mainly, I'm still recovering and get drained really easily, my kids also have a cold now....and the kid I watch will actually be staying with us for a week straight while his parents take a trip. He rules the house with them, and they let him get away with everything. At night he'll wake up and decide it's time to get up and they let him sit up and watch tv or come to bed with them. So we'll see how rough the transition is coming to our house where that doesn't fly. I'm looking at quite a few rough nights. But I've been watching him for five months and he has learned his normal manipulations don't work in my house, so I'm hoping since he's a smart kid he'll put two and two together pretty quickly and settle into a good rouine. Fingers crossed!

Taking one last day of rest, and hoping to do my Pilates tomorrow. I brought the kids to school on the bike yesterday (which total distance is less than a mile) and started hacking so bad it was awful. So it will be a lot of slow jog/walking type workouts for a while for me. But hoping to at least get that started on Monday. I'm right now just getting back into a somewhat normal routine where I'm at least up and about tending the house and getting eating back in control. Then I'll start trying to train again!

    Have a great weekend!

Valma the one time I had my ears pierced they closed back up immediately too. In fact I tried to put other earrings in later that same day (I had bought a pair just in case I turned out to like having pierced ears) and already couldn't get them in. For my friend's wedding she really wanted all the bridesmaids to wear the same earrings and necklace and asked if I would wear clip-on earrings if she bought them for me. They were actually magnetic (they looked like diamond studs). I wore them for the photos and the ceremony then took them out before the reception. My ears went numb from them and it took a few hours to get feeling back. I hope she didn't spend much on them because they've been in a drawer ever since. And now she's divorced and we're no longer friends, so apparently matching jewelry isn't the secret to a happy marriage. (Okay now I'm just being snarky.)

Laura, I'm glad you still have your sense of humor.

Valma, at least one night a week I go to bed super early (8:30) and wake up feeling GREAT.

Sherry, glad you're getting out and enjoying feeling your body move.

Was so proud of myself yesterday for going to Trader Joe's and leaving with not one treat. I love so, so, so, many of their delicious goodies. But as they say, it's easier to avoid the Dragon then to slay it.

Today's eating was pretty good. Ended up going over on calories due to an unsatisfying spicy dinner.

Oh! I weighed in light this am but I don't trust it.
