Metformin stopped working?

So, a quick background -

Diagnosed as T2 in June of 2013 - started on metformin - diagnosis only based on fasting BG... metformin dosages increased over time - and weight loss, and numbers started correcting themselves - November of 2013 - cholesterol, triglycerides, and A1C were all greatly improved - and I'd lost about 45 lbs - gained a few lbs back over the holidays - and then broke my back in late January 2014 - from that incident on, my metformin seemed to be pretty useless - my numbers (weight, chol, tri, A1C, BG tests) all started climbing... my doctor had maxed me out on meformin - taking 1000mg in the AM, another 1000mg at bedtime, with a 500mg slow release metformin at bedtime as well - but morning numbers were still in the mid-200s... after complaining for a year (and being totally miserable with numbers bouncing all over the place), I finally got a referral to an endocrinologist / diabetes specialist.

Fast-forward to this past week - I met with specialist on Wednesday, 4/22/15 - best appointment I've ever had in my entire life. She started me on 5 units of lantus at bedtime, which isn't much, and isn't enough - but you have to start somewhere - at least now my morning numbers aren't higher than my going to bed numbers... so that's a good start AND I'm waiting on test results to come back to determine whether I'm really a T2 or not... as there may be some thought that I might actually be LADA/T1...

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon where metformin just pretty much quits working??? What was your next steps? I'm curious... and starved for information.

I don't think it's as much that the metformin is working as it's not doing as much as it should. My doctor put me on Janumet which is metformin with another diabetic drug, I don't remember off hand what is was. I am also on lantus once a day. I was started at 20 units a day slowly increased then decrease to 30 units a day. As I have been losing weight my blood pressure has gone down and I have decreased my blood pressure meds. I go through periods where my fasting BG really jumps around. Right now and for the past month or so it's been staying in the 90s to low 100s. Different things can affect your numbers, if you recently were injured it make take awhile for everything to heal and for your numbers to stabilize again. Hang in there.

My injury was over a year ago... it just seemed that it coincided with the ineffectiveness of the metformin... it's very odd... and I can't lose weight to save my soul right now... my BG numbers go through the roof when I exercise too, which I find strange... they also go really high if I *don't* eat for a long time... I just want to feel better at this point... tonight is my last dose of Lantus at the 5 unit level - tomorrow night I'm going up to 10 units...
