Low Carb & Adrenals

Almost every blogger I've seen who has adrenal issues seems to blame it at least partly on going too low carb.

What's the deal? It's making me seriously wonder if I should hold off on ZC and maybe even bump my carbs up some to see if that helps.

Any insights?

I don't have any scientific data to back it up but I can tell you my experience. I started this woe trying to go as low carb as possible ALWAYS under 20g total...and I got a big fat nothing in the results department. I am on prednisone which messes up your whole adrenal system especially when you've been on it as long term as I have. Well, I had a good cheat day, then brought my carbs back down to around 25g net......BOOM lost 3 pounds (not just water from the cheat day as I only weigh once a month). This may also have to do with the fact that I upped my calories from a very severe deficit for my size. I do think, though, that some people's bodies are not meant to handle the stress of ultra lc. Just my opinion....

It's more likely that it's from restricting calories too much and working out too much. Sarah Frogoso of everyday paleo dealt with adrenal fatigue a few years ago. Turned out she was working herself way too hard and not fueling her body properly, despite eating plenty of carbs.

On low carb, most people almost never get hungry, risking not eating nearly enough. Combine this with something like Crossfit and the "more is better" mentality, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I'm noticing that several of them are saying they were on low carb low fat, not just the low carb that my brain picked up the first time around.

I'm also seeing that they cite craving salty carb food (helloooooooo Fritos) and being thirsty (4-qt days are not abnormal for me).

I think I'm going to be asking my hippie woowoo doctor, aka awesome chiro, for more specific recommendations at my appt this afternoon.

Looking for keto & adrenal led me to Nora Gedgaudas. Apparently she has a new book out - on adrenals! Much shorter than Primal Body, Primal Mind, but from the reviews, packed with info.

So, guess what I'm reading now?

Honestly, this way of eating has improved all of my numbers, including my adrenals. My endocrinologist all but danced his way out of my room after our appointment Friday. I think the adrenal issues stem from doing this way of eating incorrectly - restricting fats, too; being limited on certain foods by choice; not drinking enough water; working out too much and not eating back anything; etc.; so as others said, the more extreme behaviors.

Obviously underlying/health issues complicate this and any issues, but in general, I think it is the application of the LCHF concept in extremes or incorrectly (like those simply unable to shake the "fat is BAD" mentality and such) that complicate the adrenals. In general, this way of eating is RECOMMENDED by ENDOCRINOLOGISTS to manage such issues, not worsen them.

I have adrenal issues and for me, I need to find the right balance of calories, fats and carbs. When I'm just Paleo, I add sweet potato to my breakfast and it makes a huge difference in how I feel throughout the day. Now that my goal is ketosis, I need to eat ALOT of fat to keep me satiated and not "yucky" feeling. My goal is 20g of carbs and about 110g of fat. I drink bulletproof coffee in the morning and add avacado to every meal, which is one whole one per day. I also need to eat enough calories and make sure I don't restrict too much. The fat give me energy and keeps me satiated much longer.

I bring a whole one to work and cut it when I get there....I eat my breakfast at work everyday! lol then wrap it in paper towel and throw it in the fridge. If it gets a little brown by the time I eat the other half at lunch I eat it anyways! If I only eat a portion at home, I throw some lemon juice on it and it stops the browning. I saw a thing online once that said if you put your avacado in a container with chopped onions it keeps it grean as well.

Buy a combination of hard unripe avocados along with ripe ones to be used right away. The unripe will last close to a week so you don't have to go to the grocery store as often. I buy about 9 every 4 or 5 days like this. My family loves them. Store in a cool dark place.

For the most part, very readable. She went a bit deep into methylation & how the hormones work & my addled brain didn't quite process that part very well, but for someone who reads health stuff regularly, it shouldn't be too bad.

If you leave the pit in, it also helps it stay greener. Ive done this even with guacamole, If i leave the pit in with it, it is green, but brown if I dont.

It's true, it works. I leave the pit in one half, wrap it in plastic wrap and it stays green for up to two days longer...

So, I told my marvelous chiropractor thst I want to eat meat for a month. He told me I need more variety in my diet. I told him I planned to dip it in butter. He hadn't quit laughing by the time I left, but he didn't tell me that it didn't count...

Yep we do this. Even with guacamole. And add a bit of lemon.

Finished the book. No alchemy formulas. Tons of info. My main complaint is that it tells you to look at Primal Body, Primal Mind (her first book) for the keto diet there, but that isn't a major complaint as I mean to read that eventually as well.

Still processing. So much info, will probably need to read it a few more times to catch everything.
