Previously I was working out quite a lot - running, a little weight lifting, circuit training and bodyweight training. My cals got up to 2400 and I was bouncing around with the same few pounds, losing, gaining, losing....ANYWAY, after a fall at the gym about a month ago, I badly bruised the base of my back. Initially it didn't cause too much of a problem although as time progresses it aches and hurts quite a lot. My doctor has told me not to run (which is fine by me, running really hurts it) although he's happy for me to do things like Spin, and I pressume swimming will be fine. He's referred me to a Muscular-Skeletal clinic as we need to see if it is just badly bruised or if any other damage is done...anyway, I'm waffling now.

I am currently doing a lot less exercise - walking the dog, occasional spin class depending on how much my back aches. I have a desk job so don't really move around much during the day.

For the past 2 weeks I haven't logged food at all - and I've eaten a lot. Of anything and everything! Good and bad I've had lots of protein, fruit n veg, lots of chips, chocolate, biscuits, alcohol. While I've been eating like this, the scales have dropped a couple of pounds, bounced back up 3, then come back down by 2!?!?! My clothes are definitely getting tighter and Im feeling like a baby elephant!

I've decided to start logging again today and thought I'd start at 2000. Does that sound a reasonable figure? I'm 5'5, weight is between 147-150, desk job, walk most days but slowly and only for about half an hour, spin class is 45 mins and I plan to do maybe a couple a week (if my back allows it). I'm really really missing working out properly but until my back is checked out properly I daren't do much because I don't want to cause any further damage.

Does this sound like a good plan?

Yeah, I think 2000 sounds reasonable to start with. That will probably be a small deficit. You can adjust after a couple of weeks or if your activity increases some. I hope your back feels better...your body may have needed a break from all that exercise too.
