Hidden carbs. Literally

so... I forgot my lunch/dinner at home. (again). I decide, after going through about 10 online menus to go to TGI Fridays ( there are more of these in Oslio than Mc Donalds, believe it or not... ) I find an Ahi Tuna and avocado salad. It lists the ingredients ... Tuna, avo, cherry tomatoes, spinach, romaine, garlic aioli. Lovely. Well I first had to send it back because they forgot the avo, but then as I was eating, I began to find barley... BARLEY on the bottom of the bowl. A good 2 tablespoons just hiding in the crevices of my romaine and scattered about. I had to just pick it out. How COULD they?? Luckily, I don't have celiac... No mention of barley on the menu at all. Well at least it made me eat slowly. Moral? Ask about EVERYTHING. Ack

California Pizza Kitchen (don't know how wide spread they are, but they're a sort of gourmet pizza place) does that, too, though worse. They list like three of the ingredients on their menu. I ordered a salad one time, and found out the hard way that it was covered in corn. =/ Suffice to say, I didn't go there often (I don't like pestering the waiter about ingredients of everything and whatnot).

This happened to me at TGI Fridays as well! Not the exact same thing but also hidden carbs. I was livid. Of course I don't have a good allergy so I just kept my mouth shut. I special ordered a burger because after talking to the waitress it was discovered that the majority of their burgers have special sauce. She convinced me to just special order (I claimed I was allergic to some things). I finished my burger before I realized they put a sauce on it between the cheese and meat. I couldn't taste it because it had blue cheese and peppered bacon on it as well. But I was disappointed and it left me sad for people with actual food allergies. In my situation, the extra sauce didn't kill me. I can't imagine being the parent of a child with a food allergy. It would be stressful to ever bring them to a restaurant! If I hadn't talked to the waitress, I wouldn't have had any idea of these extra ingredients to begin with.

On another note, Red Robin is really good with being transparent.

I <3 Red Robin. They're one of the best ones for telling you what's on their stuff in their menu. What's in the listing is what you get unless you change it.

And ugh at the TGI Friday's story. That reminds me of some of the *kitten* cooks that I've seen pop up recently -- the whole "food allergy is a sham" type of attitude. I'm just like WTF? It shouldn't matter why someone chooses to order their food in a particular way. If they indicate an allergy or intolerance, take it seriously. If they request a change, regardless of reason, and your restaurant allows for customization, then shut up and make the customization.

We've had issues at certain restaurants where they would enter in that I have a food allergy on the entree, but they needed to push the button again when they entered the salad and they didn't. We actually asked a manager to tell us how we need to ask the waiter to put it in, as our area has insanely high turnover. All of my food is carefully inspected when it gets to the table, 'cause if I see crouton dust, it's going back & I'm getting a new one.

I also take enzymes specifically made for the accidental ingestion of gluten anytime we go out to eat, no matter where it is and how many times they haven't screwed it up before. It's not a failsafe, as I'll still get sick later, but it helps keep the symptoms down some when I've been glutened.

I didn't know there were enzyme supplements for gluten now, that's cool. Even if it's not enough to intentionally eat gluten (not necessarily a bad thing, IMO, though), that it can make things a little less miserable when accidentally exposed is good to hear.

GlutenEase is the brand I can find here. It's $30-something a bottle, but I only use it when we eat out so it lasts a few months.

I emailed Ruby Tuesdays to ask why their steaks had carbs. I got some vague answer referring to their seasonings. A small sirloin has 4 carbs....FOUR! That's a lot for seasonings. All of their steaks have carbs. Blah.

I think a lot of meats are cooked using sugar based seasoning. Americans are really into sugar in everything. Years ago when we killed hogs dad would let the meat set in sugar laced salt. The meat was sold as sugar cured xxx.

Yeah, thats was thinking . I didnt want to spend $50 on a steak, but almost all their meat has that super sugary sweet 'jack Daniels' sauce. Blah!
