Glad I found this group. I started low carbing again yesterday. I have been yo yo dieting the last 3 1/2 years and really want to just be healthy. Looking forward to reading your posts and journey.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but can anyone tell me why I'm getting palpitations on low carb? I notice it more in the evening and if I give in and eat some carbs it goes away. I am having trouble getting through this, has lasted about 3 weeks or so. I want to stick to it but is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

How's your sodium, potassium, and magnesium intake?

Your symptoms are almost certainly due to low electrolytes. You lose a lot of sodium during ketosis, which is why I eat pickles and everybody else drinks broth. Try upping sodium first.

There's a recent thread on potassium with lots of food options.

I get Mg from nuts and chocolate, but if you're having palpitations, take a supplement soon. Mg Citrate is absorbed well.

You may be waivering in and out of nutritional ketosis. If you eat sugar and it goes away, I'll bet you are blunting your body's production of glucagon which causes many of the same symptoms up front that you are describing.

I certainly think some electrolyte replacement is a great idea, but after doing that, I would not go back to carbohydrates. Endure it. Your body has absolutely 0 need for carbohydrates, so don't give in. The "keto flu" will just be prolonged if you keep teetering on the edge...

Yes, I had it during adaptation. I agree, the carbs are making it impossible for you to complete the process. The addition of extra sodium should get you past this quickly. I was reluctant to increase sodium due to past issues with edema but it made all the difference once I did and no more edema problems either!

Interesting. I check my heart rate quite often with my Galaxy S5 and even lying down in bed it's over 90bpm. My partner is around 68bpm. Think Keto could be causing this?

Oh, man no edema with increased sodium has been awesome. My ankles lost like two inches in two weeks. I keep looking down going "who do these skinny ankles belong to?!"

I used to blame sodium for the edema but it truly stemmed from the carbage poisoning, for me.

Could be but is unlikely. Keto usually helps lower your heart rate. That is still in "normal" range though. I was told 60-110 is normal range. If you are heavier still, it might be a bit before your heart rate starts to regulate... Mine was in the 85-90 range for YEARS... It was 70-78 before I switch my BP Meds, and now it is 60-75 or so....

But unmedicated and for over a decade, it was in that 90-ish range.

Next doc appointment, I'd suggest having your sodium, potassium, and magnesium checked. The sodium and potassium I've had check for years and have always, even with keto, been in balance. However, the magnesium they checked for the first time, and I was low... so too much or too little potassium can cause higher heart rate and palpatations... magnesium is supposed to help BP and HR, though I've not researched HOW...

I'm new too! Although, I haven't cut back my carbs NEARLY as much as the diaries I have peeked through. Baby steps for me I guess.

I have had a few episodes of palpitations and high pulse...the last being the last few days. My pulse was 97-100+ and it felt like my blood was fizzing in my heart!! A couple of pinches of salt and look salt for potassium and a magnesium tab and within an hour I was feeling much better. Today I put salt in my lemon and hot water and more magnesium and I'm bouncing!! ( not a pretty sight!! Lol) Amazing how such a little thing can affect us so much. Pulse down into its normal level in the 80's today. BP has always been good.

I had palpitations before starting keto and they continued for a few months. Touch wood, they seem to have gone.... I think now it was magnesium deficiency but I have no proof. Hope they disappear, it's a horrible feeling.
