Probably the weirdest NSV/observation ever...

Okay, so I was responding to the liqui-gel thread when I noticed this one...

I was mentioning how I've had zero allergies, despite the pollen count being insanely high lately (like, so high, hubby says they're considering adding a new level). In the way past, I'd often be miserable at this level and knocking back Zertec or debating over Benadryl (it knocks me out, though), but over the past few years, since going Primal and, by extension, low carb, and eventually very low carb, I've found I've had fewer and fewer allergy issues.

That's not the weird part, though.

What I noticed was that....I'm breathing out of both nostrils.

Now, apparently, it's normal for the body to switch nostrils and only use one at a time, and for as long as I can remember, that's how I always breathed (I distinctly remember one of the times I realized that which side I laid on would affect which nostril was open). I never recall breathing through both nostrils at the same time, though.

Reduced mucous creation is my guess. Mucous = glycoproteins (i.e., they're built with glucose). I used to have to blow my nose every morning. Not anymore. Too little mucous might not be ideal, though.

Wow! Cool. I know what you mean. The Beast used to make fun of me for sleeping with my mouth open until he asked me why. I told him "because I can't breath through my nose". It's like it's swollen inside even when there's no feeling of mucous. I can still feel it swollen inside (likely because yes, allergy season is hell for me here too) even went to the nose doctor. He said I'm fine and sent me to the allergy doctor who told me I'm basically allergic to "outside". BUT, since LCHF I"m sleeping with my mouth closed! I haven't EVER done that, not even as a kid.

    Cool huh?

Yeah, there are people who won't get it

Probably TMI now I've typed it but...

And I don't choke and gag when I clean my teeth any more. Some nights I couldn't even complete the job because I'd be gagging so badly. Now I don't even do the little cough, which was always a precursor to the gagging. It became obvious, after things had changed, that my throat had constantly been full of thick, thick mucous. Some days when I tried to spit out the toothpaste, the stream of 'saliva' was trying to come from down my throat, but it was all attached and gooey, and choked me even more. Hubby would be thoroughly entertained!

Funny, I've always breathed from both nostrils. But I get you on the lack of allergy medication, it's awesome!

I've noticed the same thing! I've always had trouble with my sinuses, and its gotten way better, until I cheated last night with pizza and immediately got stopped up. I'm wondering if its the gluten? I'd always thought dairy, but I've had plenty of that since going low- carb. At any rate, glad to know there are more and more benefits to this way of eating.

I have always had chronic sinusitis and had to use nose sprays and allergy medicines. I haven't used either for a couple of weeks. New first for me too! I haven't tested a carb response and don't plan to!
