Seasonal changes

I'm on the other side of the planet and the other hemisphere to the majority of members here. It's Autumn, the past week or so it has cooled significantly and I've been looking for carbs. I'm also finding it hard to keep up with drinking water. I live in the sub-tropics so cold water has been easy for me to knock back throughout the day.
I've been having bits and pieces of carbs. Not much. Maybe 20-30 g every couple of days with meativore in between. I know I'm carrying a bit of fluid. My ankles and feet have swollen.
Do you think this could be a seasonal thing? Some cave-man type DNA thingy that makes you want to lay down energy reserves for the winter months?
I'm back to the low, low carbs this week. My digestive system does NOT like even the few carbs I've eaten.

I sometimes have a bout of seasonal affective disorder when the season changes to fall. You too?0

Hope you settle in Sajyana. I raised my carbs to 40ish from 15ish a couple weeks ago, but not because I felt I needed it. It was in the hopes of kicking a new loss. However, I've taken to it like a duck to water and feel better than I did before. We're all different huh?
We're on our third rainy day. Had some really heavy falls over the weekend, but the sky is lighter today. The raindrops hanging on all the leaves in the garden look so pretty!
Hope your oedema (sp?) clears quickly and you settle back with drinking water again. I can't drink my water warm, so I hear you on not really wanting it.0 -

I actually love the cooler weather. Always have. My body runs hot and I really suffer in Summer.
We don't really have seasons here. We tend to have Summer, slightly cooler Summer, cold Summer, slightly warmer Summer then back to summer. We have no autumn foliage, it's evergreen. We don't even put a heater on but the change of weather seems to have been enough to have some influence.
Still struggling with the water. Can I count tea and coffee?

I hear you Sajyana. . ..same here in Dubai, it's either boiling, not so hot or a little less hot! We don't go below 25C in 'winter' very often. I don't actually like water and certainly not chilled so....just drink whatever you can. It's the amount of 'fluid' not necessarily water. People say coffee and tea are dehydrating but the amount lost is offset by actually drinking enough. ..just not fruit juice, lol.
In the UK when winter comes the desire for carbs definitely rises. ....or is that a convenient excuse these days with all the central heating etc or, as you say, a primeval/genetic program???0 -
I wish it didn't get cold here Sajyana. The winter days aren't bad and you can regularly just be in a t.shirt outdoors, but I freeze at night. We have a gas room heater and I block off all the doors I can and turn that on. It gets down to 2°C minimums on the coldest nights; probably around 12°C on the warmest winter nights. Too cold for me
That said, I have been far hotter this summer, since turning Keto, so hopefully I'll handle this winter better. I hope so. We're heading further south for 5 days' holiday in mid-July eeeeekkk!0 -
My hunger has definitely been increased by the unseasonably colder days this weekend. When it's hot hot hot I can eat so much less. I always lose weight most easily at this time of year (UK)0

Well, it's supposed to be Spring here in Canada, but our rain and wind storm turned to snow and I woke up to white. It was 0 C when I got up, it is now 1 C and the snow is melting, but we may get more today and the temp will dip to -6 C tonight.
We have 4 distinct seasons here, and I look forward to all of them, but summer more. And I do eat different types of foods in each season, especially taking advantage of fresh local produce in the summer. Not sure how I'll handle that this summer, with wanting to keep carbs lower than normal for me.
I think in general, we tend to eat heavier, more carby food in the cold. Instead of a BBQ today for Victoria Day, I am making soup. I made beef / pork bone broth all day yesterday, and made a lovely rich fatty broth. I just cubed about 3 lbs of steak and it is marinating. We will have a very meaty soup later today, with lots of steak, and a bit of onion, celery, cabbage and tomato. In the past I would have thrown something starchy like beans or barley or potatoes in there, but not anymore. I think it is possible to eat heavier, warmer, more substantial meals and still keep them lower in carbs. My veggies will add some carbs, but I won't be worried about it. I will just want to stay warm !
I do think there is something to the idea of the body wanting to put on weight for colder months ahead. But we probably don't need to do that anymore. After all, we are not hunter gatherers living in primitive times, forced to rely on the seasons for our survival, bulking up for lean months ahead. I wonder how much of our modern theory about bulking up for winter is just psychological in the sense that we want comfort in the cold ? I don't know. I think just as much damage can be done to our bodies in warmer months too, especially if cravings for ice cream, potato chips and BBQ treats are satisfied.0 -
It's so interesting to hear how vastly different the weather is for different people in the world on the same day. It was warmer yesterday. I just wore a summer dress with a cardigan.Kitnthecat wrote: »I am making soup.
I don't know why I didn't think of this. A perfect way to include more water. I'll get some on the stove today.
GrannyMay. Our very coldest nights are about 5C. We're averaging 14-18C at the moment. This week the days are still 23-25C. Hardly cold but much cooler than the 30-35C we're accustomed to.

I love making soup ! Lol....when it's 23-25 C here, I likely won't be making soup. Although when I am in the mood for a certain food, the weather doesn't stop me. I have no air conditioning in my house and have been known to roast a turkey in 30 C. Btw, 30+ feels scorching to me. When it gets that temp here, I try to BBQ outside, throw some meat on the grill and make a quick salad.0

Living in Northern Ireland we are at the crossroads of four different weather systems and rarely have a period of settled weather. We can even have several types of weather on the same day. It all goes to make life interesting. It's currently late spring and the temperature today is less than 10c at mid day. We're not known as the emerald isle for nothing.0

David just rang to tell me that we're forecast 6°C tonight and if I want to put the gas room heater on, please do. He knows I try not to. It's a very large living area to heat and seems wasteful just for me while he's at work. My pre-LC cut-off temperature was 20°C and anything below that I absolutely froze to death. I'm definitely hotter since LC.
There's heat and there's heat @Kitn The UK folk absolutely *roast* above 25ish C. Here in Perth 'roasting' isn't until around 36 or above. I'm guessing that for Jane in Dubai roasting starts around 40, 42 or more LOL
Oh @Robert you're Irish? I've never been, but from what I've seen Ireland must be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I have a cousin living in Galway, but it's highly unlikely I'll ever get to visit0 -
Lolol....I may live in Dubai but I'm still English through and through and still start roasting at 25+.....I thought I would have adapted after 12 years here but nope! 30 is just about bearable anything more and if there's no AC I drip like a tap and get very grumpy!0

Lost half my post again! I wrote that I love the UK in winter. Frost snow even rain...bring it on....just not long grey days!!
Ireland is sooo beautiful! Everyone should go given the chance! Mind so is Dubai...the desert is amazing in different lights...as long as you can get back into a car with AC!!0 -
If I lived in Dubai I'm certain my body would constantly emit an aroma of cooked meat.0

It's one of those primal programming things that have become counterproductive in modern society. Late summer and fall is when various fruits and starchy tubers would be available in a lot of climates. Those things put on a nice layer of fat to help get through the leaner winter months, especially as we moved out of the more tropical regions. Societal programming of various other carby goodies is often present, too, especially if you have winter holidays akin to our Thanksgiving and Christmas here in the US and Canada, which are notorious for carb-laden meals (it's not Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner without stuffing, mashed potatoes, candied yams/sweet potatoes, pies, pumpkin rolls, and other sugary, carby things, conventionally).
It can be undone, though, thankfully, though it may take a little more effort, especially if you're dealing with societal norms/expectation, too. Just keep on keepin' on and make the best choices you can when faced with such situations.0 -

As long as it isn't caffeinated (and I'm finding new articles saying that caffeine ISN'T a diuretic) or creamed, I count it, for the most part. I generally find a cup of tea motivates me to drink more water. I also switch up my temperatures. Sometimes I like it cold, sometimes I like it room temp...0
