I think it is necessary. How do you sign anything in print? Plus it looks nice and has been proven to strengthen the part of the brain that deals with fine motor skills. Today I was with a 12 year old girl who was writing some thank you notes. Print of course. And her handwriting looked like it was done by a 7 year old back in the day. She said it doesn't matter so long as someone can read the message. She was stunned to learn that we used to get awards for our penmanship back in school. That it mattered. Maybe with computers it doesn't. But these little twerps can't even read the Declaration of Independence if it isn't typed out for them. I just think some niceties in life are being lost. There's nothing wrong with acquiring a skill that can be considered an art form.2
