Decided to do one to focus my efforts for a month and change things up a little. Do you guys still count cals when you do one or just eat the recommended 3 meals and see what happens?

My opinion is, if you're going to do a certain plan than you should do that plan to the letter and not mix it with other ideas. It is my understanding that Whole30 doesn't weigh or measure anything (food or person) for the entire time. This would preclude calorie counting. You're also not allowed to hop on the scale or use a tape measure, just to make sure it's working. You're supposed to eat from their approved list, in their designated manner, for the whole 30 days and not let temporary fluctuations worry you.

That link is there official position on counting calories and food logs. tl;dr? Don't do it. No counting and no logging allowed.

Thanks that's helpful. My appetite has been increasing and I think a whole 30 might help me regulate it. Out of personal interest I might note down what I eat with pen and paper but not think about the cals at all.

They're fine with a journal, especially regarding what you ate (but not necessarily precise amounts) and how you felt each day.
