I need help finding a paleo bbq sauce. I really love KC Masterpiece but it has HFCS in it! Is there anything that tastes like that on the market without hfcs or non-paleo ingredients?

This is one that I make. It's more Primal than Paleo, but I'm sure you can change it around to suite your taste.
8 oz of Hunt's Natural Tomato Puree
8 oz Chicken Broth/Stock
1 tbl Worcestershire Sauce
1 tsp Organic unrefined Blackstrap Molasses
2 tbl of Pasture Butter
2 tbl of chopped Bacon (cooked)
1 oz chopped Prosciutto
1/4 cup chopped Onion
1 - 2 tbl of Apple Cider Vinegar
Sweetner of choice (I used 2 tbl of Raw Honey and a bit of Truvia/Stevia)
1/8 cup of Smoked Paprika
Garlic Powder, Salt & Pepper , and/or chili powder (if ya like it spicey) to taste.
Add everything to a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to med-low and let simmer until desired thickness. Strain sauce to remove the chunky bits or don't if you like a chunky sauce.
Also works well in a crockpot too!!!!

The problem there is that KC is a sweet BBQ sauce (goes with KC-style 'Q). Any paleo/primal recipe that tries to reproduce the flavor is going to have too many sweeteners in it to be considered such by most of the community.
You can google 'paleo BBQ sauce recipe' or 'primal BBQ sauce recipe' and find dozens to work from - if you want to go that route.
Personally, I've switched to using a coconut aminos/sesame seed/fresh ginger marinade for anything that used to be sauced. It adds a nice color/flavor, and the leftover marinade can be mopped on while cooking.
(Oh, and before you ask for the recipe - I don't have one. I just put the meat in a Ziploc bag, add enough coconut aminos to cover, eyeball add some sesame seeds and grate some ginger, add a little pepper - and sometimes minced garlic. Depends on what - and how much - ov everything I have around the house...)0 -

Hmm, that does sound interesting! Never heard of bacon in a bbq sauce before.0 -

I like using it for the flavor enhancement it gives to the sauce. When the sauce is done cooking then I just strain the sauce into a bowl.0 -
Another topic for this was posted awhile back. I'm the only one who replied to it, so I'll just copy my response here:I've used these:
http://www.cavemanbob.com/
http://www.guysbbq.com/catalog/15
The Caveman Bob's is good, purpose made to be paleo, but rather pricey.
The Guy's Sugar Free is about as good (but in a different way from Bob's), not 100% paleo (Modified Cornstarch, Xanthan Gum) but can be dirt cheap if you buy it by the gallon from their site ($13/gallon + ~$20 shipping OR you can get two gallons for just about the same shipping).
I'll likely not buy Bob's anymore and go with Guy's, since I'm not rich. Alternatively, you could make your own. One of the popular recipes I saw (though haven't tried) seems to be the "Son of Grok" recipe which I have found (the original site is gone but the recipe has been reposted elsewhere) and listed here:
Ingredients:
- 1 6oz can tomato paste (preferable organic)
- 1 to 1.5 cups of beef stock (I made my own but if you buy, you want it without salt)
- 3 Cloves Garlic
- .5 of an onion
- 2 tablespoons dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
Directions:
1. Grate your onions and dice garlic as fine as possible. You want your BBQ sauce a little chunky but the more fine you dice these, the better the flavor will spread through the entire sauce.
2. Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan. Whether you use 1 cup or 1.5 cups of beef stock will depend on how thick you want your sauce.
3. Bring sauce to heat on stove with a low setting.
4. Cover and simmer. Stir frequently and taste regularly. The longer you simmer, the more consistent your flavor will be. I simmered for 20-30 minutes.
5. Enjoy!

As a KC native, I have to chime in and say KC Masterpiece does not represent Kansas City BBQ.
That is all. :-)0
