Water intake

I'm 172lbs and am trying to intake no less than 9 8oz glasses of water a day, but trying to sneak in 12. I wake up EXTREMELY thirsty and water has never tasted so good. By the end of the day I'm still thirsty, but water has a funky taste to me. I'm getting water from Culligan--and it is the same water morning AND night. Why would it have a different taste? Or am I weird and alone in this?

Temperature makes a lot of difference in the flavor or my water, too. It tastes totally different when cold versus room temp. For me, I would guess this has to do with the changing hydration levels and sensitivity in your receptors as your day goes on and your body changes. When you "NEED" different things, your body tastes different things, prompting your body to fill the needs with it's own associations.

I personally aim for 124 oz a day, but I weight 241 currently (haven't adjusted water goal yet since weight drop is today)... That's 15.6 8-oz glasses or or 7.4 16.9-oz water bottles daily. If I'm active, I up it. My water tracker (Water My Body on Android) is great for adjustments due to heat and activity settings. I've been told to try Waterlogger if on iPhone.

Are you getting enough sodium? When it starts to taste funky, try sprinkling a little salt in it and see if that changes how you feel about it. Drinking too much water can lead to diluted electrolytes, turning off the desire to drink water.

Also, how often are you going to the bathroom, and how much do you urinate each time? There's something called Diabetes Insipidus (not to be confused with Diabetes Melitus). It's characterized by extreme thirst and excessive urination (particularly regardless of fluid intake). It's a hormonal issues, so if you feel you fit the symptoms, you'll want to talk to your doctor about it.

I agree about the temperature of the water. Cold water is always more appealing and easier to drink.

As for water/bathroom--I feel they correlate with each other on a normal level. If I drink more water--I go the bathroom more. If i drink less--I go less.

I believe this is common (or so I thought I read it somewhere once)--the more water I drink the thirsty I get. I would be TOTALLY fine drinking 6 glasses of water a day. It leaves me satisfied and not at all thirsty. After 9 glasses I'm constantly thirsty and that sucks! lol

This right here makes me think of electrolytes being off. Do you add salt to your food? Are you taking any supplements?

Also, if 6 cups leaves you satisfied and not thirsty, don't drink more. You shouldn't be drinking more water than your body asks for. It lets you know how much it needs.
