Stomach bug: What can I eat?

Hey folks,

After being sick for three days with a variety of symptoms, the most persistent and consistent one has been nausea and stabbing pain inmy stomach after I eat. I finally went to the doctor this morning. She prescribed Zofran (anti-nausea, I've taken it before), ruled out some nastier possibilities like gallbladder infection, and concluded that I probably have the stomach bug that's circulating around town.

My question to you: She told me to eat a bland diet. Usually, this means carbs only. What would you eat? My appetite is next to nothing, and I dread eating because it hurts.

Thanks a bunch!

Mary

Bone broth and eggs, if you can handle them...

Thanks! Don't have bones on hand, so would beef or chicken broth suffice, in a pinch? I've been eating eggs for breakfast, but can't finish them and get stabbing pains afterward.

Any kind of broth should work just fine. Maybe a homemade electrolyte drink or just add some salt to the broth?

Stabbing pains in the stomach doesn't sound good -- hopefully your doc checked you out for possibilities other than the flu.

I haven't needed it yet, but a lower-carb version of the BRAT diet might be celery, hummus, avocado, etc.

She attributed the stabbing pains to my taking Advil for joint pain at night. I've only been eating about 600-900 calories a day over the past few days (not intentionally, just worked out that way). So there wasn't much of anything to buffer my stomach from the harshness of the NSAID. It was an "oh, duh!" moment for me.

She did order bloodwork for me, and I'll have the results tomorrow. Urinalysis was fine. She palates my abdomen; no obvious organ issues there.

Thanks for the food suggestions, @wabmester!

My favourite when I was sick was broth with extra oil added. Throw in some garlic and sage for healing powers, too. Mmm...
