Walking

How long did it take for your body to get into shape without the pain? I weigh 294. I have very bad shin splints and have very good walking shoes and inserts. My right calf still bothers me half-way into my walk. Lately, I have tried to incorporate a faster walking speed in efforts to increase my heart rate. I would like to walk with the ladies at work, but cannot keep up with them. They ask if I want to go with them, but I know I would be miserable- so I am walking by myself to get conditioned with the hopes of eventually walking with colleagues. The more the merrier!

When I first started walking I couldn't go very far - maybe 1/4 mile. The pain just started getting better over time and I could increase my distance. I read that you should work to increase either speed or distance but not both at the same time.

And don't forget to stretch your calf and thigh muscles, too. I worked with a physical therapist to help even out some muscle imbalances and make sure I was doing the right stretches, it helped a lot!

Have you tried moving the area. If I roll my leg on a foam roller, lacrosse ball, etc. it makes my hot spots less painful (including sin splints).

This technique works well for quite a few soft tissue sensitivities.

It took me a few months to adjust personally. I was running on sheer determination. Music helped me get into the zone and helped me to stop freaking out about every ache and every click lol

It's amazing how much longer and harder it is at 53 to get back into a decent pace/distance than it was at 46. I go slower than my daughter, who just a few years ago I was walking circles around. But each day I go out I get a little better, stronger, faster (does that remind anyone else of the Six Million Dollar Man?!). My goal is to run/walk my first 5k mid September. And frankly, it doesn't matter how long it takes as long as I finish. You'll be walking with your friends soon enough, each day you're a few steps closer to that goal!

I keep asking myself that same question but i know that it can be done!
Move often during the day building up strength!
I also dont like walking with the ladies at work because they walk very fast and it embarasses me! maybe you can find a walking partner who is on your level! Good luck
