No - not that sort of rash ;)

Hello everyone - sorry not been on for a while. Have been swimming every day but I used to post during work breaks, but now access to any sort of "chat room" etc has been cut-off by IT and when I get home from work I have almost forgotten how I swam that morning.

Now for the rash bit - all of a sudden I think I have become over sensitive to chlorine - started to itch on Thursday after swimming, swam Friday and still itched (but it warm in the UK for 24 hours so I thought it was just that). Swam yesterday and then, oh boy, itchy itchy spots all over the rhights, ankles and backs of the arms. Nothing else has changed in my routine (soaps etc all the same and so was my food) and reading online suggests I might be overexposed to chlorine!!!

Going to have a break this week until the rash goes (taking allergy pills as well). Then will swim again and see if its back. If so off to the Docs for me and off to buy some of the vit-c spray as well.

I know this sounds bad but hopefully its not chlorine but an allergy to something else (apparently getting a skin reaction to chlorine is often a side effect of something else). Something else I can live with, but time without swimming will be hardddddd....

Interesting. Annoying for sure but interesting. Maybe they changed the manufacturer on some of the chemicals used in the pool. I hope it clears up soon because I know what you mean that no swimming is hard to do!

If it ends up not being chlorine, see if you can find out what other chemicals they're using & what guidelines they use for balancing the water (pH, etc.). Hope it's just an oddball occurrence & clears up quickly with no long term issues.....

about a month into swimming I was terribly itchy every day for about 5 weeks. But it was also the coldest part of the year here so I think the cool dry air combined with the chlorine was just drying me out ....

I went to the gym this afternoon to ask as they closed the pool on Wednesday to "rebalance the tanks" and the rash started on thursday when they re-opened. The operations manager said that they hadn't changed the chemicals but would take a look at the pool test records (they test the water every 4 hours and keep logs) and get back to me if anything seemed amiss. Now covered in calamine lotion and have a big tub of aqueous cream for showering with. Will see what happens when I get back into the pool later this week once the rash has gone (if it hasn't gone by the end of the week Doctors here I come!)

Another possibility to consider is exercise induced anaphylaxis. Have you increased the intensity of your work-outs recently or been overtaining? I've had exercise-induced asthma and very bad exercise-induced rhinitis at times, all of which are related. A friend of mine is a long-distance biker and he's had it. His doctor first gave him a subcutaneous injections of epinephrine, which did not help, and then IV diphenhydramine (Benadryl), which worked for him. Subsequently he's been prescribed hydroxyzine (generic, brand name: Adorax) and it totally controlled his symptoms.

Thanks for the suggestion Robertus and its very interesting to hear that this can happen. I haven't been overdoing anything recently but then I rarely take days rests either. It's a possibility to keep in mind.

Do you have access to a Salt Water pool? Its worth a try if you do.

No salt water pool near me, but there is an ozone filtered pool in a very very expensive private gym near my office. That might have to be a last resort option because of the price.

I haven't swum for a week and the rashes I am always battling are gone. Must have something to do with the constant moisture!

I started getting itchy and a rash, and I used the search function of MFP (main bit, not just 'our' bit) and there were quite a lot of suggestions of things people had tried...

Luckily for me the cure turned out to be just using the search function, and I didn't have to try any of them...I hope yours spontaneously goes away too. If not, worth a read through.

Hello everyone - mine seems to have gone away and I swam for the past couple of days and it hasn't returned. Stress related skin problem seems to be my view (work is astonishingly busy). Good to be swimming again.
