Jaw-drop moment

So, I had some friends over this weekend, dear friends, good people. Moms, Dads and their kids whom we've known for years. Hubby smoked a brisket, which turned out fantastic, and we had lots of other yummy things, too.

Everyone had just started serving up, I had given my daughters their plates and parked my 11-month-old baby boy in his high chair. I was loading up a plate of food for me to share with him. He hasn't done baby food since about 8 months, he's always wanted whatever we are having.

He was squawking loudly, so I grabbed a fist full of the fattiest, tastiest nuggets of brisket and plopped them on his tray, without really thinking about it much. He was delighted. Then I could feel my friends' eyes on me. They've probably never seen a baby eat that way before.

I know I can trust these folks not to worry about this, but I could tell they were surprised! Baby boy gobbled up the choice pieces happily and squawked for more.

Have you had a similar moment in which you shocked your friends?

    To me that isn't outrageous

At one, a child should normally get close to half of their calories from fat.

Sadly too many would think it normal to give them 100% sugar.

Oh yeah, at least half their calories from fat, I'm sure. I read recently that newborns are naturally in ketosis, and if exclusively breastfed, stay that way until they start solid foods.

My friends were a little surprised the first time we went out to dinner and I ordered a cheeseburger, no bun, no fries and especially when I declined a beer... that's a big one for me. I love draft beer and it's the hardest thing for me to cut from this diet. But when I am on track, as I plan to be for at least the next month, I skip it.

I try to encourage the kid. She's dropped sugar-laden drinks for the summer, but you should hear her moan and groan about it.

My dog is the only one besides me on a low-carb diet, and some people even find that odd. Raw meat!? Instead of high-carb kibble!? Shocking! :o

You mean to tell me that your dog does not eat vegetables? Sacrilege!

Oh man, I had a 4-year-old at the party, almost exactly the same age as my middle child, who just about told me off when I told her that her drink options were milk and water. Someone brought lemonade as a mixer for adult beverages, and the kids found it and that was the end of that. I think next time I'll try to make a low-sugar fruit "sangria" for the kids.

@wabmester, that must be one happy dog! My brother smokes and grills meat all the time, and kept his ailing Great Dane alive 3 years past life expectancy, giving him meat scraps regularly. Those two were meant to be together.
