Sugar alcohols?

I am relatively new to the LCHF diet and I came across a term that I've heard before but I don't know much about. Sugar alcohols. On a box of Atkins food bars it says to subtract sugar alcohols and fiber from carbs to get to net carbs. I don't know if I understand what this is or what it does. Just the sound of it makes me think it's bad though. Lol. Any thoughts on this or explaination of what it is? Thank you.

They're artificial sweeteners that your body doesn't absorb or digest.

Some people love them. My body doesn't tolerate them at all-- any more than in a stick of sugar-free gum leaves me writhing in pain for a few hours. I learned quickly to avoid them!

There was a discussion about them not too long ago, if you scroll back a bit. It looks like there's evidence that they can cause carb cravings, they still trigger the hormonal responses for hunger that sugar can cause.

They give me gas, diarrhea, stall weight loss & feed intestinal candida yeast. Overall, not good for me
