Breaking a fast the low carb way

I had always read that one should break a long fast by eating fruit first and to not eat meat for as long as one fasted. I'm not eating fruit now and wonder how group members break fasts. I am planning to have homemade chicken broth. I will have fasted for about 33 hours.

I break a fast with salad and a meat (steak or pork). I don't know what the meaning behind breaking a fast with fruit is, but I never do. I have never had a problem just going back to eating my usual LCHF after a fast. (Besides I would figure eating a fruit would make the diarrhea worse!)

I never gave that subject any thought. Typically my next meal will be breakfast and I modify nothing but it contains no meat or fruit.

    Interesting

    I had never heard that

I definitely have protein at every meal and fruit is only a snack

Bacon and eggs for me. I tend to avoid fruit early in the day because I often get hungrier later in the day.

I usually have troubles with constipation after a fast, so I break it with soft foods and a lot of water.

Thanks all. My fast was 1 day and then about 9 hours of sleep. I also take levothyroxine and cytomel each morning and need to wait to eat after that. I'll eat the broth and nut butters first.

I think the fruit recommendations were for prolonged fasts.

If I remember correctly the idea behind breaking the fast with fruit was to slowly reintroduce foods into a supposedly detoxed body. Not really a valid reason in my eyes...bring on the bacon. eggs and steak! :)

I broke my fast successfully with the chicken broth. I was not hungry at all but I ate 1/2 cup throughout the day. Later, I had a couple of handfuls of buttered popcorn at a movie and a 6 oz burger with some lettuce afterwards. No ill effects - yay!!

I am dating a new guy who is perfectly fine with my eating restrictions. It helps a lot.

I always break fasts with meat. Last time was a 3 day fast and meat was all I could think about. Nothing bad happened, my body just carried on like usual.

Read up on Dr. Jason Fung..who has his very ill diabetic patients fasting for days on end… according to him if you are in ketosis and burn the fat stores you just keep fasting with water, broth, very limited calories. as soon as you don't feel well you stop. I think fruit sugars will just spike your blood sugar, and cause other issues like headache, etc. since most keto'ers eat only berries for their fruit, and in small quantity, you may be better with a small protein shake with ~1/4 c berries and 1 c spinach added for a "soft reentry"
