Hi! I'm Laura, I'm new to the group and fairly new to swimming. I've actually swum (swam?) all my life but as a total non-morning person I was never keen to join the swim team because their workouts were so early! I thought about joining the swim team in high school, but by then I was also a top level softball pitcher, which is a year round sport at that level, so I wasn't going to be able to give the time needed to the swim team.

Anyway, in Feb 2014, a friend suggested that I might want to try swimming as I hadn't yet found a form of exercise that I enjoyed doing on a regular basis. That reminded me that I'd enjoyed swimming as a kid so I decided to give it a go. I swam regularly for several months and then quit finding the time in Oct 2014. I'm now back at it, although, having to start over a bit, but so it goes, right? I really have no clue what I'm doing, I figure if I get in the water and keep moving to keep my heart rate up then I'm headed in the right direction :D

Hooray!!! Somebody from Portland, OR!!!
Welcome, Laura. I'm really, really new to swimming. I did not swim as a kid. I was terrified of pools or any other water that went past my knees. A foot injury that I continue to work on led me to aqua fitness. I saw the lap lanes and thought that swimming would be a great thing to do instead of running. Yes, it is, if you can DO it. So I've been working on my technique (aided largely by You Tube and the supportive group right here). There are all levels of swimming, experience, fitness, etc. Something for everyone here.

Glad to have you! (Where do you swim??) I'm at the SW Community Center.
    Welcome!

    Stop! You're killing me.

I didn't start swimming for exercise until I was 40ish (around 10 years ago). Also a foot injury led me to the pool. I learned from watching others, getting some coaching and just kept swimming. You are definitely headed in the right direction. Youtube is a good place to look or if your pool has a masters club that includes all skill levels, that's another. One of the big differences between swimming and dry land sports is that form is REALLY everything. Kicking harder and turning your arms over faster won't necessarily make you a faster or better swimmer.

    Welcome!

Welcome to the group, Laura - you're definitely in the right place!!! Plenty of helpful folk here with vast & varied experiences, so somebody should be able to answer any questions you might have. You are definitely moving in the right direction, getting in the water consistently is the first step. As you delve more into it you can decide what you are looking to accomplish from swimming & how you want to do it......

Welcome to Chlorine Anonymous. But unlike other anonymous program, we encourage feeding the chlorine addiction as often as practical.

Welcome to the gang, Stephen did a really good job of summarizing how we look at our selves.
You will find that the " http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1342951/did-you-swim-today#Item_1914 " is where we keep a running summary of what we have been doing.
I noticed we are just about to cross the 2000 post mark. woho.
