Calcium-Magnesium ratio

American governmental agencies tout the consumption of dairy as being essential for bone health. I doubt that there is an American woman who hasn't got the message loud and clear. Practically every middle age woman I see at the checkout line has a dozen yogurt and slabs of cheese in their cart. All the women at work choke down Tums to make sure they are getting enough calcium. So with all this emphasis on the importance of calcium; osteoporosis certainly won't be a problem for baby boomer heading into their golden years. We will see.
Food for thought.

Thanks for this, it explains why I started having leg cramps recently. I have been taking magnesium, but not the full 3-horse-pill 425 mg dose, just doing one pill. When I ran out of 1,000iu vit D pills, I bought 5,000 iu vit D. Soon after I started taking that a few weeks ago, I was waking up with charley horses every night. Now will up my mag dose too.0

Too funny! I had the very same experience with a vitamin D increase to 5,000 IU; cramping EVERY night. I could not figure it out. Very painful to have a cramp in the left foot arch and right calf at the same time.
I now supplement with 400mg magnesium glycinate before bed. I don't supplement with vitamin D in the summer but it did the trick to stop the cramps this winter.0 -
HI..I did a lot of research on this, and wound up talking with Dr. Dean and Dr, Sircus… taking the pill form of Mg, esp. SLowMag that has a DOUBLE the Calcium to the Mg amount seems not to absorb in the body ..some like Mag Oxide nobly adsorb <20%…so spending money on these and getting less than half is a waste of money.
ALso 400 a day men, 320mg for women is still considered too low..especiallu as we do not eat the same nutrition in veggies as the charts show!! going up to 1000 mg day is considered more appropriate, especially for dieters.
The lMG iquids available supposedly absorb into the blood stream at full value, and don't cause laxative effect. (most of us could use that effect, you just lower dose if it happens too often)
I use Dr. Deans Remag, and it made a HUGE difference immediately in leg cramps, as well as blood sugar and other energy issues. some dont like her over energetic promotion, but I LOOK PAST her personality to the fact this woman MD & naturpathic dr. knows her stuff.
I also do a transdermal oil daily, I use the "oil" coating my feet and ankles, elbows, knees, backside ( concentrated on area of hip pain from a car accident), then I use a SPRAY Mg, lighter, and use that all over everywhere else but face. It DOES make a difference. any research will show how essential Mg is to nutrition and many general health issues. even using a cheap Epsom Salts Mg soaking footbth can make a difference.
I saw a youtube vid, they revealed our Grandparents GOT FULL nutritional value form Cabbage Spinich, etc…but NOW agribiz does NOT amend soils, so a comparison-- in 1913 the calcium in cabbage was 248mg..in 1992 is was 47!!! The IRON in Spinach in 1913 was 64mg..in 1992 is was only 2.7…so 20+ years later it may be LOWER for all veggies..this is why paying for Organic may be the main reason to buy it, and making sure the local farmer is adding minerals back into the soil.0 -
Good post KETOGENICGURL. I have been playing with transdermal oil for about a month now together with supplementation. I use magnesium chloride flakes melted in shea butter and coconut oil and apply all over. My skin has really responded well to this combo. I also use an Epson salt foot soak after hiking.
Your point regarding the declining nutritional and mineral content in our vegetables is a good point. When the main focus of agriculture is yield per acre and product shelf life-you know something is wrong.
Personally, I like Dr. Deans approach. We need more qualified people to call the government agencies and associations out. Too much of modern medicine is geared towards-"let me continue my unhealthy lifestyle and give me a pill". Modern Pharma is more than willing to accommodate whether it be statins, proton pump inhibitors, anti-hypertension drugs, etc

Hi Deoxy4..looks like I just replied to a post of yours in Keto, on MFG..
yes I've spoken to Dr. Dean several times….I respect her dedication, she gets a lot of grief by crass people saying she's too pushy, or charges too much.. for a quality product? People can just buy cheaper, right?
(the same is said about dietdoctor.com site for charging a fee…a common practice for many businesses..but unknown to dieters apparently. People can have opinions, yes, but I see defamation and name calling, actually reviling the person for their business!)
I am often surprised to see such socialistic comments against the people who took decades of time to research and create products ..but people just want everything cheap for themselves, despite the cost to produce it..nobody will invest their own money for 15 years for an unknown drug to go thru all the trials and research..but complain when it costs too much later when all the risk is gone.
[just ranting after a couple weeks watching all sorts of comments I've never heard in 50+ years as an adult...we used to respect inventors and those who did the work, now everyone thinks they are the 99% and someone 'rich' and greedy ripped them off.]0 -
This saved my life. I mix it in warm water before I do to bed and my leg cramps are SO much better.

SO here is my thing...calcium deficiency is a MYTH unless you are told you have very low levels in your blood. If you are OK (via blood work) then all is well. Supplementation is actually harmful sometimes. I try not to and manage my intake via MFP. As is with anything else, you are probably fine unless you have a diagnosed deficiency, which I have ad several and managed them ALL through diet and an occasional supplement. Work smarter, not harder! OR more expensive!
