Weekend Bling Report

@Wendy98 - Dang, that's impressive! A sub-3 marathon just 3 weeks past a sub-3 Boston?!!
You're putting ideas into my head. I had tagged Flying Pig as a marathon I would never do as long as I keep qualifying for Boston, because it's too soon after . . . and it might still be too soon after for an old geezer like me. Gotta remember that the younger folk recover quicker and more reliably.
I have have always thought back to back harder efforts could never happen. I guess 20 days was enough for recovery? I felt pretty good after Boston. I ran one 14 miler and one 16 miler (at marathon pace because that is how I do it) before The Pig--anything else I ran was shorter. What is even odder is how good I feel today--never would know I ran a marathon yesterday. Went to the gym like usual today.

My first Pittsburgh Marathon is complete. After failing on my last long run and having leg issues over the past couple weeks I wasn't expecting much. And me fears were realized quickly as my left leg started cramping about 9 miles in. By mile 18 I had to stop at the aid station. After a quick checkup to confirm no structural knee damage, I put on some icy hot and gave it a go. I made 2 more stops at aid stations and managed to finish. It took me under 3 hours to run the first 18 miles and another 3 hours to finish the final 8. I now have about 3 weeks to heal before Ragnar. We'll see................

First 5K of the season, 28:42, not a PB but better than last year's 29:09 on that course.3

Here's my first 50k bling! The race was supposed to be a trail run, but had to be relocated at the last minute due to trail inaccessibility somewhere along the route. They moved it to a flat loop of dirt/gravel/paved. Got it done, and I'm looking forward to next year when hopefully we can run the original course.

Yesterday's half marathon bling!

Congratulations @Wendy98 !! Well done on the 5K and the marathons!! I'm in awe.0

Ran the Lilac 10K in 40:04 gun time, 10 seconds off my PR 10K at Dedham 3 weeks earlier. Lilac is the USATF Niagara Region 10K Championship, which means there are some good runners but the field is not as competitive as it would be at a USATF national event. The serious competition was among open teams; my time was good for 1st of 28 in the M 60-64 age group; 36th of 783 overall; 4th overall age grade, at 82.63; and leading my team to 1st Men's Supervet (60+) honors.
The bling was a bit understated. I got a nice no-label hat for winning the age group, and a cheap generic Track and Field medal for the team honors. The reverse of the medal is blank, it doesn't even say what the award is for.0 -
I had signed up for a small nearby 10K on Sat. There was some confusion and I accidentally followed the 5K route. After correcting it at the end, I ended up placing 1st in the male 30-39 group for the 5K.
Not an overall winner, and the medals for gender/age are generic (as compared to plaques for overall winners of each distance).

@midwesterner85 - Hey, at least they engraved the race on your generic medal. Mine came totally blank, and I wrote what it's for on the back with a Sharpie.0

Wow, that is truly generic.0 -
May 20th was the Joplin Memorial Marathon. I ran the half. Overall I was very happy with my run effort for this. I didn’t PR, but that’s OK. This was my 2nd half marathon race, ever. My first was 6 weeks ago and I finished with a time of 1:56:31, and I finished today at 1:58:48 which put me at a respectable 15th out of 42 in my age group.1

We didn't get the torrential rain or thunderstorms that we expected at the Highland Half, but there was a light to moderate rain for most of the race. I followed the advice @MobyCarp gave me and got some Smartwool socks, and they kept the blisters to a minimum. I don't usually run in a hat, but I was glad to have one to keep the rain out of my eyes, even though it was too big for me. I put my phone in a ziplock bag and made sure my headphones were waterproof (they were), and I was good to go.
It was a small race already and a lot of people didn't show up (because of the weather, I assume), so only 88 people finished. Much of the course was on the Maryville Greenway, so we had nice views of a little creek and were kept company by assorted waterfowl. I'd heard others worrying about the hill at mile 10, so I held back a little, but when I got there...well, I wasn't very impressed by the "hill." I'm used to running on bigger hills than that! After that, I knew I was on track to PR, so I ran the last couple of miles with a big grin on my face. A few people who had already finished cheered as I got to the finish line, and I yelled, "I'm gonna PR it!" They all started yelling and cheering louder. I finished in 2:26:37, which was my first under-2:30 half marathon time and 13 minutes faster than last fall's PR.
No "after" pictures because everyone was ready to get out of the rain, but here's a "before" picture in my hat that's too big, and the medal.

@midwesterner85 - It may have looked like a very generic medal but I actually liked the way the front of the medal looked, 2 runners and especially the 3d look to it and the way they had a folded ribbon wrapping around the edge of the medal, and it did have the engraved name of the race on the back of it.0

Made a last minute decision yesterday to run the Canandaigua Classic Half Marathon today. It was a small race, with 261 finishers. I was 4th overall with a time of 1:33:06.15. As expected, I won the M 60-64 age group. The medal is for finishing, the pint glass and sticker are for the age group:

Not a timed race (I timed it... and it was 3.5 miles, not 5K), but did a 5K trail run this morning. Not sure how to load a photo from my phone, but I got the same bib number as The trail run on 4/1 (see profile photo).0

Ran a new PB in a 5K race today! 24+minutes beats my old 5K PB by a minute and my time for the same race last year by 4 minutes! Also earned me a 1st place for my group!

Funny (not) thing happened on my way to the Ridgewood NJ Memorial day 10K. The Monday before, in training, I pulled, strained or otherwise messed up my left calf/Achilles tendon causing my first DNS. Damn. Hurt to even walk much less run. Did 3.75 slow miles on Saturday as a test and failed the test. Feeling better and hoping to get back out on the road in, maybe, another week or so.0

I ran the Running of the Bulls 8k in Durham, NC this morning. Beat my last 8k time by two minutes, and got a sweet cowbell finisher's medal:

On Sunday 5/28/17 I ran the Mountain2Beach Marathon. 5:54:14.0

I completed my first Ragnar Relay this weekend. It was quite the experience. I ran 23 miles total. I had a moderate and 2 extra hard legs (including the "Ragnar" leg which they consider the hardest). I did a 7.5 mile run in the middle of the night. I ate like crap and got very little sleep. I had a great time.
I will be doing this again.

@dewd2 -Awesome! I love the medals! My husband and I are part of a Ragnar Bourbon Chase team in October. Your pictures are making me super excited!1

D-Day 10K at Currahee, 49:59, 10th overall, 2nd in the 40-49 year old age group, which is what they actually handed awards out for (the race results page shows 31-40 year olds).
There are no distance PR's set at this race, you only race the mountain. And the mountain always wins.4 -

I ran the Christchurch Half on Sunday. I wasn't expecting much as I had two dreadful nights' sleep prior, was battling with a sore throat, and woke to freezing cold, rain and wind. I layered up in a couple of merino thermals and had a light running jacket, however, at the last minute ditched the jacket as I get pretty hot when I run and the rain had abated to a drizzle. Feeling mediocre, I thought I'd just enjoy the day and not stress about my time and started at a comfortable speed, enjoying the beautiful views through Hagley Park, however, at 5k I discovered I was running dead on 5:10 pace - the speed I needed to go to achieve my dream sub 1:50. I was feeling good - the cold wasn't bothering me and the rain was light to intermittent (and the wind must have been behind me or diffused by the trees). At 10k I was still running well so I put my head down and concentrated on maintaining my speed. By 18k I knew I had it and sailed on to the finish line, largely oblivious to the icy headwind that everyone else complained about in the last 5k. I even managed to pass a few people in the last couple of kilometres. I'm thrilled with how the race went and am I loving my new PB!!

I'm "home" in the States for the summer and thought I'd add some American bling to my collection. No finisher's medals for this 10k, but the event was small enough that I somehow managed third place in my age group. Also no PB this time, but I'm very pleased with the results and think I can finally say I've recovered from my post-marathon "bleh". Best of all, I got to see my sister - it's been 2 1/2 years! - she was doing the 5k charity walk.

I am a distance runner. Friday evening I stepped outside my comfort zone and ran the Charlie McMullen Mile on a track. This is only the second time in my life that I have run a race this short. My goals were simple: Beat my time of 5:50.32 from 2 years ago, and stay ahead of my friend and team mate Bill to maintain my lead for the M 60-64 age group in the Rochester Runner of the Year Series.
I achieved both goals, winning the age group with a time of 5:44.90, after hearing Bill breathing behind me early in the last lap. Bill finished in 5:47.95 and did a good job of pushing me to run faster. We did a pretty good job of getting around that track, for a couple of guys over 60.
The medal was a cheap generic thing that didn't even say what it was an award for. I'm told it is gold, but I had a hard time seeing the difference between this and the bronze medals in the poor light at the track Friday.

Medved 5K to Cure ALS today. 81º F and quite humid. Runners were complaining about the heat. I didn't think it was all that hot, but the humidity was a bit annoying. Fast, flat course and some good runners to chase. Official time 19:32, good for 21st of 412 overall and 1st of 19 in the M 60-64 age group. No real bling, but I got a gift certificate for winning the age group:

Ran the Great Grandma's Challenge which includes the William A. Irvin 5k and the Grandma's marathon. 5k was nice and slow, in the 42 minute range. Marathon, I hoped for a sub-4, and was on track for that at the half, but totally bombed the second half, Final finish time was 4:24:06. I can't really complain though. It was my first full, and the first half set a new HM PR for me at 1:59:30.
Shirt for completing the challenge, and my finisher's medals. Got tech shirts for finishing both races as well, but those are both in the wash.7 -
Hyde Park Blast this past Saturday. It is a decent sized local race and an odd distance, 4 miles. I wasn't enthusiastic to race. I have had back pain for the past 2 weeks. It comes and goes and sometimes it is hard to take a deep breath without pain. My plan was just to survive and put out a decent effort. Final time was 25:54 (6:28/mile pace) which got me 6th OA for women. Top 50 of each gender get a Brooks long sleeve running shirt with race logo and "Top Finisher" on it. My back was bugging me all day yesterday after the race!2
