fasting blood glucose spike from too many calories and/or carbs?

I am (was) a prediabetic and about 40 lbs over weight. I went vLCHF to help with that and to reduce inflammation in my early arthritis. So far (last 3 weeks) the ketogeic diet has helped with that a lot.

This morning I had a fasting blood glucose spike up to 5.7 (about 103). Lately it is usually in the 4's (or 80's). I like to keep it in the 4's and far away from the prediabetic range.

Yesterday (Sunday, July 12) I was eating out and ate WAY too much in the evening (macadamia nuts and Krisda (xylitol sweetened) chocolate chips. My total calories were 2154, total carbs = 57, fats = 191, protein = 82, sugar = 17. Usually my calories are between 1400-1800, and C=20, F=120, P=71, sugar <5 (approximately).

Also, about 1400 of those calories were eaten from 4pm to 9pm.

According to the ketostix, I am in trace ketosis. I am normally small to (occassionally) moderate ketones.

Do you think my fasting BG spiked to 5.7 because I ate too much, ate too many carbs, ate too late in the day, a combination of all of that, or something else? Too much is definitely the theme here. LOL

My guess is it was a combination and the solution is to bring calories back down, cut back carbs, and stop eating earlier. What do you think?

Thanks!

Are you measuring your FBS at the same time each morning? The biggest factor is probably your cortisol level, which is highest in the early hours. Try staying fasted till about 10am or so, and then measure.

In any case, that level of carbs (57g) isn't even enough to refill your glycogen stores. Your brain alone would burn through those carbs while you slept.

Yeah, the carbs did spike. But I wouldn't worry about it. If you said it spiked over 200, then get worried and only a little worried. In my Insulin days as a diabetic my numbers would go from 20 low (almost to a coma) to over 400 (that's the highest my meter would read). Its taken me 10 months to get my BG to under 100 AFTER water fasting for 24 hours. When I eat they are 125 - 140 now. I would love for my BG to spike to 103.

And here is a pic to see what severe spiking looks like when on diabetic meds, insuline long and fast acting, glipizide, metformin, statins:

I'm not trying to diminish your concern. And when I was living the "doctor recommended" regime of controlling my sugars, I was a happy normal, never-getting-sick person. I never even got colds. Yes, I was damaging my body, but since I started keto'ing about 11ish months ago, everything is getting better, I am recovering after more than a dozen years of carb abuse.

Fortunately, you have caught yours early!

P.S. The ketostix are very, very inaccurate. Get a Ketonix breath analyser, WAY more accurate....

If you ate out, are you sure you had the right carb info for the food?

Not too worry. I was like Dan, insulin using uncontrolled diabetic. Insulin has us store excess sugar in our fat cells. As you are losing fat, the glucose is released. You are losing fat!!

Ketostix may measure low if you drink a lot of water. The ketones are diluted. The water is flushing everything out.

I'm measuring my FBS at close to the same time, usually between 7:00 and 7:30, but sometimes as late as 8:00 if I slept in. I never thought about the times changing my BG except if I ate late in the evening.

I'm not sure if I will saty fasted until 10am or so. I fully intended to go 15 hours each day without eating (even 12) but I'm not ready for that. I'm going to give myself more time to get used to keto and then I'll try to draw my fasting times out past 10 hours.

I didn't realize 57g was not enough to restore my glycogen stores. I have a lot more learning to do. Thank you!

    That helped a LOT!
I had no idea it would swing that wildly. You did not diminish my concern, but put it into perspective.

I doubt I'll be getting a ketonix breath analyzer soon. We're out of work at the moment - buying ketostix was my splurge. LOL

I'm going to look through your stuff later today. Thank you.

Not entirely. It was at a BBQ and I made a good guess to it. I could have been low or wrong. You've got a point there.
    Thanks!

LOL Fat loss is always good. I forgot about that.

I don't think I drank any more than normal yesterday. I have noticed it seems to vary a fair bit day to day. And I am definitely thirstier with this WOE. I drink more than I used to.

    Thank you!

BG also can be affected by stress, lack of sleep, coming down with a cold, etc. And Dan is right, 103 is not much of a spike. My fbg are still between 115-125, even though my daytime readings are between 90-100
