I have read about low carb for years and tried it to different degrees but never full on Atkins. I was diagnosed as a T2 back in October and I have lost 30lbs but my sugar is still too high (a1c 6.7) I have really been cutting back but not out. I have several questions. I have a protein smootie with about a cup of blue berries or mixed berried most morning for breakfast. I'm assuming I need to cut fruit out all together?? Also, what about dairy? I love cheese but I have seen some posts that do not recommend dairy.

Over the last week+ I have started making mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes and they arent bad. Not potatoes, but not bad.

What kind of snacks and sweets do you eat? I bought some stevia brown sugar substitute and regular stevia last night. Also some almond flour (which was terribly expensive), thinking of trying some cookies of some sort.

Thanks,
Doug

    I reversed my Type 2.

Took a year of low carb while consistently doing cardio level exercise to burn up my circulating blood sugar.

I got my carbs thru veggies and did not eat fruit but maybe once a month some strawberries.

It worked well. The low blood sugar level let me burn fat and get more fat for fuel adapted

Once fat was dropped, 125 lbs, I am eating some fruit on occasion but only as preactivity fuel.

    It worked.

I'm a newbie here, so I'm sure you will receive much more thorough advice from many others soon... but fruit and dairy is very dependent on each individual person and what your personal goal is for carbs. Berries have the lowest carb numbers so the best choice if you are going to have fruit, but a whole cup sounds like a lot.

You need to watch your macros and how you feel after having those berries. For me, I can have berries but I have to stay far far away from artificial sweeteners - they kick start a craving like there is no tomorrow!! So far, I do not have a problem with dairy, but many do.

Your definition of sweet will change over time too. What I now find an absolute decadent treat, is coconut cream (full fat, canned coconut milk - put it in the fridge over night and use the hard stuff on top), whipped with no further additives and add some fresh berries on top.

Double check the carbs and sugars ("ose") in the protein shake. If it is flavored it usually contains hidden sugars and carbs you might not see. I opt for eggs and bacon for breakfast.

Depends on the cheese, not all created equal w.r.t carbs. I add vanilla and cinnamon to things to sweeten things up. Berries are fine, but not more than a cup and I choose to have them as a snack later in the day. If I have them too early they trigger the munchies. Avocado/Guacamole is my new go to snack.

    FairLife milk

Half the sugar and 50% more protein

    All the benefits of milk!

It is a buck more but now I have a milk made protein shake once in a while

I use unsweetend vanilla almond milk for my protein shakes. I usually have ggs on the weekends when I have time to cook. I get up at 0445 everyday and out the door by 0515. Not a lot of time to play around with. Todays breakfast was a quest bar and diet mountain dew :)

HI 1234usmc…. I cut back from 1 C berries to just 1/4 C…and I use a hempseed protein powder which has minimal processing/least carbs…(brand" Warrior Force"- best product review)

Protein shakes are ideal for your schedule, don't give them up!!

add vanilla or other flavors tot he almond milk, and you won't miss the berries. 1C blueberries is 17 carbs..pretty high…also add spinach/kale(also 7gr carbs per cup however) romain lettuce tot he shake..it bulks it up well.

consider grinding flaxseeds and adding 1 tbl tot eh shake also.

I change up the berries/flavors all the time..Orangesicle vanilla, or Chocolate raspberry are my 2 favorites….and I love having the veggies this way vs salad ( I loathe cooked spinach, so this is a great solution for me)

I have not cut out dairy or fruit, but I am careful about when and how much I eat.

For example, I can't do yogurt or berries for breakfast, since my FBS is my highest sugar of the day. I basically eat eggs, bacon or just eggs. No carbs.

However, after breakfast, my blood sugar begins dropping and I can do yogurt in the afternoon or berries at dinner.

I never eat a full cup of yogurt, but a 1/2 cup and then add unsweetened coconut, low carbs nuts or chia and stevia.

Milk is out of my diet now, but I drink the CocoAlmond milk blend by Califia Farms. Only 1 gm carb and very creamy and tasty. It works well in smoothies too.

I don't eat too many snacks these days, but if I do, it is low carb nuts, cheese, pork rinds, or 70% dark chocolate sweetened with stevia.

I basically don't do fruit any more. The occasional strawberry, once or twice a month. Fruit makes me want sweets. I do eat cheese and once in a while sour cream or cream cheese. I don't get hungry for snacks any more, but I keep pork rinds, olives, deli ham and cheese here just in case. Monday makes 8 weeks of keto for me, so I an a newbie, but this is what works for me.

I was able to reverse type 2 diabetes too almost 6 years ago. At first, I did not eat any fruit or dairy and then added in 1/2 an apple (don't like berries) with peanut butter and/or an ounce of cheese sometimes. I did not have any additional sweeteners. Sometimes diabetic treat any sweets as glucose. I only did moderate exercize at the time. I drank 1 gallon of water per day.

Earlier this year I was having protein shakes for breakfast (egg or pea, chocolate) mixed with water and other powders for nutrients. I was able to maintain or lose weight and my AIC was still below 6.

If you test daily, maybe try a few days sans any sweets including fruit and stevia and see if your levels change. Then add things back individually.

Because of the effect fructose has on triglycerides and fatty liver, I cut most fruits out of my diet. (See http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/08/18/fructose-and-the-fat-switch.aspx )
Occasionally I will have blackberries or raspberries, maybe blueberries, but very few and very far between. If I eat them every day, I see water gain. I am too far from my goal to allow myself to give in to that now. Maybe when I reach maintenance (in about a year, I hope!) I will be able to indulge in a few fruits now and then.

That was a really good article. That explains me to a T. I just bought a big bag of frozen berries, so I will occassionaly add a small amount, not a caup for sure. Most days I will leave them out, like I did today. I really want to get to the intermitant fasting level of skipping breakfast, but I am so hungry in the am!!!!!

I agree with 1234usmc. I learned that I am sensitive to fructose from MRT-Leap testing but had no idea other carbs could be converted. Also, my uric acid levels have been high for years and no doctor could explain. They just checked me for gout.

Thanks a bunch for this new avenue of research!
