I plan on taking everything I've learned and using it for life. However, I don't plan on being in ketosis for life. I look forward to incorporating fruits and a variety of vegetables again. I don't plan on incorporating grains regularly. However, I imagine once I hit goal that I'll feel less guilt over the times I do cheat. Now that I know how to control myself, I know it will be different. I still can't control myself once I have a bite of something delicious. But I can control what I do afterward. I no longer let the binge carry forward beyond that moment. I understand my body more. We'll see how it goes. If I gain a little, then I'll edit. I don't plan on going back to my old lifestyle. But dang, a woman needs sushi!
As always, including special things as an occasional thing, for the average, non-metabolically challenged person should not be a huge issue. If you make sushi a once a month or once a quarter treat, and maybe have a "keto" day the day after to minimize issues, you should be able to sustain that.
Me, I refuse to feel guilty even now. I ate it, I knew what I was doing, so I own it. If I want to eat a whole chocolate bar, I'll count the carbs, accept the hit, and move on. Guilt was more damaging to my metabolism and mental choices than any carb or food I put into my mouth, so IT HAD TO GO!
I don't know that I'll ever want to incorporate many fruits again, but there are a few higher carb veggies that might make an appearance again at some point...but the veggie carbs never hit me as hard as fruit or bread ones... But they will be occasional "guest appearances" and not part of my every day, but honestly, they are that now, just in super small reasonable portions!0 -
Only if don't want to maintain low cholesterol. Carbs cause LDL to increase, decreases HDL, and raises triglycerides. At least it does for me. Fat in food is your friend.0

For me, eating less than 100g makes me feel better. If I cheat and have a beer, or something else very high carb, I don't feel very well. Once in awhile is not too bad, I just get back to routine the next day and it doesn't seem to do me any harm. Last week, I had a couple of days in a row where I had too many carbs, and felt really awful. So I can't see myself giving up this way of eating and going back to the old way. Occasionally having a treat or eating something I wouldn't normally eat, yeah, but not making it a daily habit again.0

Yes, but I had to largely give up beer a few years ago due to celiac disease (barley). The GF stuff tastes like a home brew. Sigh.
Do they market low carb beers yet? If so, are they actually low carb? I know in the GF varieties it is unavailable.0 -
thank you for all your answers, i think i got the gist of things it's not that i want to go back to eating carbs on a regular basis, but i was concerned that going off carbs for prolonged periods of time would render you more sensitive to them in the future, i can see that it's different for everyone here so i supposse i'll have to wait and see and get to grips with the almond flour etc...it's like learning to cook all over again!
Have any of you implemented the low carb on the kids diet too? i have three and i'm starting to think that i'm not doing them any favours by letting them eat cookies, etc...0 -
I think you'll find after a period of recovery you can maybe tolerate more carbs without ill effects. I certainly can. See how it goes!0

When I saw my kidney doctor he actually told me to slow down on the weight loss..that was a shock…..I see nothing wrong with dropping 50 lbs in a year, but then adding carbs over >50 for me slows loss to nothing. so yes, this is a lifetime program, which is why I don't worry over week to week numbers. Like others I am STILL learning HOW to do this.
Also I am grateful I got a BGM..because I had no idea how close I was to diabetic ratings until started checking. as soon as I keep carbs lower I see better readings...and I was a girl who ate a ton of candy, breads, crackers, etc before LC, even on 1400 calories…I shudder at how MUCH sugar I could eat, and never thought about it.
From all the stats it takes people 10 YEARS to get to diabetes by eating too much carbs/sugars….and then a lifetime after to control it, so am trying to head that off now.0 -

My kids are too old to make too many changes on their behalf. But the family as a whole has certainly had a small carb reduction due to the fact I just don't make pasta or rice side dishes anymore, but im the only one that chooses low carb specifically. However, tonight, out of nowhere both my daughters (17 & 21) opted for no bun on their cheeseburger even though my husband bought pretzel bread buns. They said it was because they weren't very hungry. But they didn't skip the zesties french fries. Lol. (I opted for grilled yellow bell pepper and garlic with butter)0 -
forever for me, if I stop the weight is going to come back on, I'll be hungry and always crashing from hunger, and my skin will suck. I'm sure there's more. That being said I am at 50 or under right now, I plan on eventually upping it to 100 or less0

OP I think you nailed it on the head when you said it's like learning to cook again. In the world of LC you really gave to learn whats right for your body. While A can eat a few berries and not waiver, I may eat the same amount and feel like crap. Maintenance isnt about just keeping off the weight, it's also about making sure you know what's good for your body -in and out of the 20g of carbs or less.0

Nah.... I don't miss beer or ice cream. It never did me any good. I'm done with self destruction in a pretty wrapper. I don't hate it or obsess with it. A more rational approach to food has gradually become my way of thinking.

What a great way to phrase this ! It isn't a treat anymore if it causes harm. They make my body feel bad, so I don;t want them.
But also, I have found that these "treats" don't live up to expectations in that they don't satisfy me like they used to. They just don't taste as good anymore. Treats like ice cream taste too sweet.
I did have one low carb beer this summer, supposedly 2 g carbs, but it tasted kind of flat and watery, not worth it taste wise. I find that I want to reach for alcohol less and less with this woe. 2 ounces of red wine is enough for me these days, or none at all.
Feels like a very sustainable way of eating for the long term. Feels great to be in control !0 -

I have not chosen to do Low Carb with my kids, but just by association, they eat far less carbs than they used to. They have always liked fruits and veggies, so pairing that with a protein at mealtime is natural to them. So, their carbs mostly come from fruits, veggies, and the few times a week PB & J sandwiches. They also have the occasional ice cream or candy. Now, they are more likely to reach for a piece of cheese, nuts, or fruit more than anything else.
I cringe at the idea of "forbidden foods". So, I just don't buy them, yet don't make a fuss when they are out with friends or at a function where they are serving treats. The whole 80/20 rule and all.

I do consider LCHF a way of life for me. That being said, if I am really craving something high carb- I eat it-- in a reasonable portion with some protein-- if I eat carbs all by themselves I feel HORRID. Then I go back to my usual routine. I have a hx of binge eating, but my binges have been decreasing in frequency and intensity for the last several months and I am pretty dang happy. I feel good when I eat the way my body prefers. I feel crappy when I don't. Since I like feeling good, I think I will be sticking with this WOE.0

My kids aren't LC per say. However, we water their juice 50/50. Supper is entirely LCHF 80% of the time. Soda is a "only 1 when at the in-laws." And we impose sweet/junk limits on them. I fight DH on this mainly in the realm of chips. I prefer they eat fruit or veggies as snacks. He keeps buying the chips. I walk a fine line as he was fairly nasty in the beginning about making me understand that just because I can't have those things, I'm not to " make everyone else suffer along with me." I never said a thing about his eating, only the kids... Well, he has since come around quite a bit and is with me on the sweets limitations. He still buys the chips. Le Sigh...
I have 4 kids. The 2 middles already show signs of inheriting my inability to handle certain carbs. I'm trying to nip that in the bud.0 -

I had just about learned to cook high carb when I switched to this WOE so I really had to start from scratch again I also am in the process of learning to shop for both my WOE and adding a carby element occasionally. I was at the store yesterday and realized I knew how to pick the perfect crown of broccoli and the perfect pack of mushrooms, but had no clue how to pick out "good" potatoes, corn, or yams.
I am the kid in my family, but it works the other direction too. It's easiest to cook one meal and I do most of the cooking(mom works and dad has this way of ruining our cast iron skillets to the point of needing to be reseasoned ) The most I'll do different to satisfy my dad is to micro-bake a small potatoe, and I make him do it most of the time because it throws off my cooking order for my steak mushrooms and broccoli!0 -
I can't give up my summer time zuchinni (well anytime I can get it for that matter) I can't just cant, it's like candy, soooo delish!!!! But for the most part I intend to teach my kids about how this WOE works.0
