Was discussing Quest Bars vs having something else...this one lady likes PopTarts as her 'treat'

I haven't eaten anything as processed as PopTarts in a long time..so I looked up the ingredients.

I KNOW the FDA allows small amounts of bug parts per serving, as unavailable in mass production.

The ingredients shown in this article..(warning) may be off-putting!

DESCRIPTION OF RED BEETLE PARTS GROUND UP AND USED IN THE POPTARTS AND YOGURT
http://knowwhatsinyourfood.com/2013/05/01/carmine-food-coloring/

But addition of ground up red Beetle abdomens to get the RED coloring is creepy..and they are CHANGING the name on the packaging from "Carmine" to indicate the beetles..to numbers and other words to confuse actual contents.

True, bugs can be consumed for their protein/nutrition and already are eaten world wide, and red is one of the hardest colors to reproduce for ANYTHING (painting oils, red glass for glasswork, etc.)…so I guess this is a good a reason as any to dye the 'wild strawberry' PopTart..hahahahaha

What's wrong with natural red bugs, lol. People have been using that to colour food for a very long time - the Aztecs & Mexican Indians used it for centuries before the Spaniards came, it's the chemical crap like Red Dye No. 40 (derived from coal), that 'bugs' me about Pop-Tarts etc...

When I was a kid and used to bake with my Nan, red food colouring in bottles was always labelled 'Chochineal'. She took great delight in telling me it was crushed beetles that made our fairy cake icing pink! I'm kind of surprised that this isn't widely known. I'm not about to rush out and eat Pop Tarts though o:)

:) Yep, all cochineal or red/pink colouring comes from beetles. Always has.

I would take the beetles over Red No. 40 - my body really really really, did I say REALLY does not like #40. We're mortal enemies... *shudders at the memories*

I'd eat bugs instead of chemicals any day. But then, I'm not eating pop tarts or crappy processed junk, so if I want to eat bugs, I'll probably have them on their own. There's a protein bar at my health food store made with cricket flour, but I think it has sugar and other stuff in there too, so that's out.
