Metformin-can you cut the pill in half?

Hi guys!

I have been having one hell of a time swallowing my Metformin. I've had problems swallowing since I was a child. I've had lots of barium tests done that actually show the area where things get caught up but aside from trying to stretch the esophagus, there isn't much to be done about it besides chewing thoroughly and taking small bites, which obviously doesn't work with pills!

I'm taking the 500 mg tablets right now (2 at breakfast, 2 at dinner). I take them one at a time with tons of water and I sometimes have a problem where the pill sits there and then I end up vomiting up the water that is sitting on top of the pill. It's terribly embarrassing and gross for my family to contend with.

So, I'm not on extended release and I was thinking, couldn't I just cut those suckers in half? I don't have much of a problem with smaller pills and when I do, I can easily force them down with water (without the water coming back up-ew).

Thoughts?

yes you can ...I was prescribed 'half a pill' per day when I was still on metformin ...so actually told by doc and pharmacist to cut the pills.
