LCHF Cured!

Normally I stick to VLCHF, but several days ago I went out with a friend. Stuck mainly to lchf, but did have some bread. That night, felt like my stomach was turning catabolic. I thought I was dying. I crawled into bed and started looking online to see if it was a normal reaction. Turns out it was and luckily I was able to drown my stomach in water and sleep it off. That horrifying experience has completely erased all my mind's cravings for starches/sugar. Lfhc has cured me.

Oh man, I thought I was having a harmless dalliance when I ate 3/4 of a super thin crust pizza. Like, the equivalent of 5 crackers worth of wheat flour. Had a headache all day yesterday, which caffeine and acetaminophen wouldn't touch. Soooo not worth it!0

(It was a tiny pizza)0

When I eat carbs now it literally feel a like I swallowed a brick. Hurts so so so bad. Needless to say it makes it way easier to stick to plan0

I will admit, I ate more than a little bit of bread that day, probably why my reaction was so intense. All I can say is never again. I was missing bread due to the emotional aspect of it, but luckily that bad experience did me good.0

I ate 12 red grapes yesterday morning with a small about of cottage cheese and my breath acetone level dropped from high to low during the day and I repeated it last night I am totally out of ketosis this AM. Not feeling really bad but the 24 carbs from 24 grapes must to have put me well beyond 50 grams of carbs for the day.
Did pasta last Thanksgiving after 2 months of serious low carb eating and it was a very bad experience that I do not want to repeat.0 -
^^^ i soo agree
last thanks giving i was just starting so i broke to indulge in some carb loaded food
NOT THIS YEAR !! soo not worth the food hangover i would get-
its amassing how our body can adapt0 -

I wonder if you don't have silent celiacs disease. I eat bread on cheat days just fine. Fills me up fast tho.0 -

Nah, I've never had that reaction to bread before. I think it was from me being vLCHF - I try to stay below 5 g of carbs. So suddenly influxing my system with 100 g of carbs plus definitely wasn't the best idea on the planet.0 -

Ouch! I definitely want to stay in ketosis. Luckily I don't like the taste of most fruits. This will be a good reminder when the hols come though. *shudder* I don't want to ever feel that way again.

Food hangover!!! That's definitely similar to what I felt. I've been doing IF and have just added in 24 hour fasts so this time I will be better prepared!0 -
The first symptom I get from eating wheat again is itchy eyes and nose followed by stuffiness and mucus buildup. Then a few hours later the headache comes. OY! Reason enough to avoid bread, pasta and pizza. (However, I get no symptoms from ice cream so that one is a lot more tempting!)0

I thought I was the only one. I've been vLCHF for three weeks. I had a bite of cake and a little bit of bread crust. I felt really crappy this am. I won't do that again0

It sucks we go thru this after a slip up, but boy is it a good reminder of how damaged our bodies were or can be. I already suffer from gastro issues so I find it easier (most times) to remind myself how ugly that cheat can be afterwards.0

Wow! Omg yes! I've had moments like this too! Most recent was last week I went out to eat with my sister and ate some tortillas and ugh I came home early because my stomach was in soo much pain.0

I feel very lucky after reading some of these posts. When I have a higher carb day I add a pound or two and don't see other symptoms. I'm so grateful that I started LCHF before things went haywire. I hope to read more stories about these problems lessening after you follow the program for a number of years.0

I call that "the bread brick" and it happens with bread, pasta, pretty much anything bread-like for me. My doctor requires me to try bread-like products once every two weeks for another few months. I look forward to January 19th, my one year surgery anniversary, where I can stop trying to eat foods that just don't agree with me, never have, and likely never will.0

Feel free to show your doc this page with other keto/lchf'ers talking about this. Honestly, even if it was doctor ordered, if I didn't reel good eating it, then I wouldn't. But that's between you and your doc. Hopefully Jan 19th arrives early!0 -

Yep, I'm sticking with my meat and cream over here from now on. Carboholics can have them. I like my stomach feeling like it's not turning catabolic or like a I drank full bottle of vodka.

Luckily I didn't get a headache. Almost sounds like you have a wheat allergy.0 -

I'm actually glad it happened now vs when the holidays come. Now if I make sure my mind doesn't erase that memory as a traumatic event I should be good.

It didn't effect my weight too much maybe a pound or so. That'd be an interesting experiment to see after a year or two of full lchf taking a day with ~100g of carbs and seeing if I have any adverse reaction.

I have been at this for about a year now and still am learning more about my body and food effects. There is a lot of good to know stories to read here.0

we are completely grain free, and about 3 weeks in my husband had a burger patty at his company picnic. I'm talking one of those tiny 4 oz or so ones. He spent the next day in the bathroom. I havent cheated yet, and don't intend to. He plans on going off the rails at Christmas and maybe Thanksgiving (to be fair he'll be well into maintenance by then, I won't be), and I'm kind of disappointed as what kind of holiday will it be if/when it makes him sick?!?0

I know that feeling all too well. It does make sticking to plan a lot easier. The days I know I want to indulge I fully know I'll have a couple painful days after.
I've been tested for celiac and wheat allergies and all are negative. I wonder if it's ibs related though I've never been diagnosed with that. My sister has ibs and her Dr said to follow the scd diet which has helped many of her patients. She went gf and cut or starchy veggies and had been doing much better.0 -

I just had bariatric surgery and I have to try lots of foods every two weeks that I don't like or want during the first year for healing and to remain compliant with my health insurance carrier. If I become non-compliant, they stop paying! I have discovered I don't need a bunch of it though. Either it's going to sit after 2 bites or it's not. "Not" is usually the answer, but I can honestly say I tried.0 -

Damn that sucks. In that case, January's not to far away! Hopefully it's not messing with you lchf too much. I'm dreading my endo appointment coming up due to this reason. I have a crazy metabolism and vlc is the only thing that manages my symptoms and treats them. Hopefully my new endo won't look at me like I'm mental like the last one did for saying I want to be lc.0 -

It does screw with it some days. Here's my chart since Feb 1st...
The green is where the average post-surgery patient should be. The bottom red is my preferred area, but you can see the crazy spikes. On the days my carbs end up high, hubby will say, "You're carbby," (a play on "crabby") to which I usually want to punch him. But he's right. When my carbs go into green or above, I feel like crap.
The interesting adventurous part is that since I had gastric bypass and have malabsorption, I really don't know how many carbs I get every day. If I ingest 30g, I may only absorb 20g of them or 5g. I just don't know and there's no way to really know, so every day is an adventure. I just go with the carbs minus the fiber and call it good.
My endocrinologist is thrilled with my vlc numbers and suggests "the lower, the better, providing my lab work is good." And it is. My lab work is better now than it's been in 10 years. *chanting* 5 more months... 5 more months... 5 more months... And then I can eat without bread, pasta, and vegetables that make me ill!

@2Poufs thanks for sharing your chart/graph and explaining it so well.
In looking at the chart and seeing the green being about 35-65 grams of carbs but you prefer the red below what are the objectives of bariatric surgery? I am sure it does more than just force one to stick with the very low carb diet. Does my question make sense? It seems the AMA must have gone all out to support very low carb diet for weight management. I do hope your malabsorption issues resolve soon.
This is all new to me. I have been eating <50 grams of carbs most days for 11 months now to manage my joint/muscle pain that I have had for 40 years and it is working out very well. The pain when down in 30 days and the 40 years of IBS was cured within the first 6 months of very low carb eating lifestyle.
