I started run camp today. In the beginners group. First mile was 18:50 and I was dead last, although I only walked 3 times for roughly 90 seconds each. I tried to keep my head on my own pace, and to stay slow so I could go further but I can't help but be a bit disappointed in my showing tonight. True, I haven't done any c25k training in a month (I WAS on w5d3) and have been really slacking on any exercise of late. It was hot and humid and I was hungry. I feel like I need to learn to breathe. What can I do over the next week so I have a better outcome at next weeks meet? Thanks in advance.

i think you identified what you need to do already.
keep up with training barring injury and such. work on breathing exercises. eat something.
sadly, we can't do a whole lot about the weather. but think about how great it will feel in fall. you are doing this for you so keep at it and keep moving and you will improve. i imagine that's what the camp if for anyways :) keep it up
  • Thanks @moyer566, I kinda figured that was it but I was kind of hoping for some magic pill... lol!

I'm still impressed that you only walked three times for 90 seconds each, after not having run for a month! Good for you! I think Moyer had some great advice, and you intuitively know what to do, so the only other thing is to keep showing up. :) Good luck!

if you find one, please let us know :)
  • Went out for 2.5 miles of intervals tonight. It was a homework assignment - run 2min walk 4min, repeat x5. My thighs are still sore from camp Tuesday, doing long hills and foot golf yesterday. However, I did make all the intervals and didn't die, my thighs are sore but not as bad. By George, I think I may be getting back on the right path! I tried concentrating on taking slightly longer strides and that seemed to feel better. Interesting!

Thanks @sfinsc, nobody's gonna hold me down!! ;)

Great job! Hang in there and don't compare yourself with anyone else. That is the great thing about running: you are trying to beat yourself. Everyone is so positive and supportive. Just be consistent with training and you will improve.
