Hi! I'm still new to primal, but I signed up for my first marathon in Oct. Does anyone do endurance training while doing Primal/Paleo? Do the lowered carbs impact your training or energy levels?

I'm Paleo and an endurance athlete. I'm also doing a marathon in October :)

I've done 2 marathons since I've been Paleo and PR'd both of them! For the first week of training I usually feel like I'm dragging and then once my body is used to running on fat instead of carbs I feel like I could run forever. If I feel like I'm having a particularly bad day or a particularly hard run and I need extra carbs I'll fuel with a sweet potato for breakfast, and larabars or dates during my run. It has worked really well for me so far.

Paleo is not a low carb diet for everyone. Check out Paleo for Athletes. It's a great reasource. Mark Sisson has also done a number of posts on this over at Marks Daily Apple. Enjoy lots of sweet potato, squash and fruit!

Thanks for the tips! I start my training program next week. We'll see for the next month how I feel and reevaluate from there.
  • I also recommend Paleo for Athletes. It was specifically created for eating paleo/primal while running marathons. It is a must have resource.

I'm also a primal endurance athlete (half marathoner doing my first full in October as well) and have had no problems going grainless. As others have said, paleo/ primal is not necessarily low carb.
