Running my first 5k on the 4th of July

July 5th is supposed to be my final day of the C25K program, but this 4th of July run is just too good an opportunity to miss.
I live in Vancouver, Canada, but will be visiting Santa Monica, CA in July. The "Red, White and Blue 5k/10k/half-marathon/marathon" is being held within walking distance of where I'll be staying. I know I won't quite be up to running 5k in my C25K program by that point, but I figure I'll give the race a shot. Heck, what else would I be doing at 7 a.m. that morning?
Am I being over-ambitious? My goal is simply to survive; not finishing dead last would also be nice.

You will totally be up to running 5k by then. Most likely not in 30 minutes, but you should be able to pace yourself and run the entire thing.
It is a great opportunity. Your goals are perfect.
Trust me, there will be a million people at a celebration race like this. About half of the 5k participant will be planning on walking the entire thing. Maybe more, with a 10k being held at the same time.
Remember to smile as you cross the finish line!0 -
I think you'll be just fine. Think of it this way; you'll be graduating one day early! Just pace yourself and don't start off too hard. And walk if you need to. You don't HAVE to run the whole way; you just need to cross the finish line.
And the best thing about running your first race? You're guaranteed a Personal Best!0 -
Good point, Zanne54! Personal bests are great!
BTW, I assume from your profile picture that you play hockey. So do i! Not well, but I play. Love it!0 -
You won't be dead last at all! I did one at the end of my 3rd week, walked most of the thing, and was definitely NOT last. Good luck and have a blast!0

You will be fine. I did my first 5k around week 7 back in July and I took a few walking breaks but I survived and thought I did pretty well.
listen to what everyone says about not starting too fast. I found running in a race is like when you do a long Highway drive and you get back to normal roads-it feels like you're going slow but you look and see you're above the speed limit. I ran with my phone and it gives me my pace every km. I felt like I was at my normal/slow pace but when I got the check in I was more than minute under!!
Most important of course have fun0 -
My very first 5K was on the 4th of July 2 years ago. I wasn't running at all then, so I mostly walked it. My goal was to not be dead last, and I wasn't. Just go out with the intention of having fun!0

You are absolutely ready to run 5K!!
I did my first 5K on the day after I finished the C25K program -- it was hard and I was pretty sure I was going to collapse when I was done -- but when I crossed that line and knew I'd run 3.1 miles I was so excited!! You can do it and there is no reason you should give yourself an out -- just go into it saying this is the final run of C25K! No better way to finish up than with an actual 5K! And, way to go for taking the plunge!!0 -
You've already won by planning on doing the event. Sounds like will be an awesome day for you. Have fun with it. And great job with that running you have done. The C25K program is amazing. Keep up the great work.0

Done! I accomplished all three goals: I ran the entire distance, I finished in under 40 minutes (36:16), and wasn't dead last. What a great way to complete W9D3! It was a lot of fun, and I can't wait to do another one. Thanks for the encouragement!0
