Day One (and a few silly questions)

Today is my start day and I'm honestly really excited about this new adventure...I'm especially eager to see if my arthritis improves. Anyhow I have a few silly questions.
I am aiming for net carbs around 25ish or below. My husband is 6'5 and a somewhere around 310-325 (we forgot to weigh in the morning). So silly question #1 is can his body handle more carbs than mine because he's so much bigger? Everything I read seems to have the same carb range for everyone so I guess weight/height are not a factor and it's more an individual metabolism issue?
Silly question #2 is about this bulletproof coffee. Is there a reason for the blending? I feel like one of the 900 blog posts I've read leading up to my lifestyle change said the blending did something special but for the life of me I can't remember what or where I read it. I have an espresso machine and I drink cappuccinos instead of having food at breakfast so today I just added some melted Kerrygold butter and coconut oil to a mix of HWC and half and half and used the steamer/frother wand on my espresso machine and it seemed to incorporate it all together really well.
Edit to add: By blending I mean in an actual blender. I hate having to break out the blender or the nutribullet.

Great question, and if you keep this up, you'll understand how this stuff works better than most people do.
The answer is mostly no. At rest, the brain is the main consumer of glucose by FAR. And our brains are pretty similar in terms of energy needs -- about 500-600 kcal/day.
If he exercises more than you do, then the answer is yes! Muscles will burn glucose, especially if he lifts weights or does other things to push his muscles into the anaerobic zone.
In either case, if he doesn't want to go as low as you (25g carbs), he may not have to. I restricted to around 100g/d, and that worked great for me. The magic number is whatever reduces cravings and hunger for the individual.

I'd say to restrict you both into the 20 carb number for two weeks (induction) and then just whatever level individually keeps you in ketosis and out of craving and still dropping weight. I try to do around 40 and hubby does around 50. Once you get keto adapted your levels can increase. I drop a pound or two a week. He's slower but still losing. But other health considerations are in play like my diabetes (blood sugar control off meds) and his liver enzymes (his fatty liver will cause a fever if he eats lots of carbs).
As far as BPC I'm no help there as I don't like them. I just use a lot of half half or heavy cream, preferably.0 -
Regarding BPC, I tried an immersion blender and a whisk at first and thought it was absolutely disgusting. No matter how long I used the immersion blender, I STILL had coffee with an oil slick on top. Obviously the whisk did no better. When I finally broke out the blender and the butter and coconut oil actually emulsified and mixed into the coffee, I realized why people raved about BPC. It's SO MUCH BETTER! That said, there are people who don't mind the oil slick.0

Thanks for the replies so far! He doesn't exercise at all so no extra carbs for him! lol
One day when I have a real cup of coffee and not an espresso I'll try the blender! The steam wand seemed to blend it up well with no major oil slick on top but I only used 1 tsp of each because I'm new at this and I don't have a gallbladder so I didn't want to shock my system! lol0 -
I should also add that since he has NAFLD, it's probably better for him to restrict more. 25g should work great for him.
For him, more important than burning glucose is the effect of carbs on triglyceride formation, and that scales up with increasing consumption.0 -

Oh, I don't have a fancy steam wand. If it works for you, great! Maybe I just bought a particularly crappy immersion blender.0 -

There was talk about using a frother for those of us on the go, so I would stick with that as long as it works. That being said, super smart move on the starting slow with coconut oil. Even those folks with gallbladders have trouble with too much coconut oil = bathroom troubles. As you slowly ramp up, your natural bile production will increase slightly, too.
FYI, I find that I have less no-gallbladder troubles with a steady level of fats, no fasts over 12 hours (don't worry about adding in fasts until after adaption and then only if they work for you or you stall, and maybe yours will work better...I find a midday fast works best for ME), and adding Kombucha massively helped my gut issues...as far as that 30-second find a bathroom now nonsense that was one of my no-gallbladder side effects...
Happy to discuss any no-gallbladder stuffs if you have any questions, too. Been low carb since January, Keto levels since February, with only 3 minor off plan excursions so far.0 -

Do you mean my husband? Confused.

In her introduction, @anglyn1 mentioned her husband had NAFLD:

Does yours too? If so, then yes, I meant him too.

I agree. (@anglyn1's husband has NAFLD) You both might as well keep carbs low. It can't hurt.
I use a whisk on my BPC. I'm too lazy to use the blender and a whisk froths it up nicely anyways.
Good luck. Remember lots of salt and broth in the first few weeks.0 -
I always blend my coconut oil into my coffee, but that's because i like my coffee cold, so if I don't blend well, it will harden and I don't particularly enjoy chewing my coconut oil0

It's going to be hard to gauge my husband's carbs because he isn't into logging his food. A while back I made him an account here and would log for him each night before bed...I might have to do that again or at least look things up and add it manually. I've given him some guidelines of things that shouldn't steer him too far off 25 or under, just hoping he sticks to my suggestions. I think once he gets past the first few weeks and can see the benefits it will be easier for him. Fingers crossed he doesn't give up before then though!
@briteyes when you blend it for cold coffee do you just immediately pour over ice? Does the coffee start hot or cold? So far I've only tried hot coffee w/ the oil and butter.0 -

Ok, gotcha! I'm just happy when he stays around 60 (40 net). It's a constant struggle with lunches at work. I make lunches but he "forgets" them.0 -

Same. He has an acct but I can't get him to log either. C'est la vie.0 -

I'd say you had a crappy immersion blender. :P In my experience, an immersion blender does as well as a big blender. The issue I usually have is with keeping it from spilling out everywhere! It's going to be hard to gauge my husband's carbs because he isn't into logging his food. I don't do iced BPC, but my understanding from the recipes I've seen is that you start out with hot coffee, mix in the fats, then ice the whole thing. If you try to mix the fats in when the coffee is cold, they won't be liquid and it'll be harder to emulsify them.0 -
I've been LCHF since March this year and have yet to put coconut oil, or butter, in my coffee. I do use hwc and that makes it great for me and enough of a breakfast on most days. I do pour mine over ice too and still can't stand the thought of the cold oil and butter in there. But, it works for me. I get my fats through cooking with them.0

I don't do coffee cold (or at all, honestly), but my BPTea was always hot. However, I do make a chocolate hemp shake (on HealthfulPursuit.com site, two minor substitutions), and I use melted coconut oil. I often make this the night before (or in case of today's Thursday night), and it blends in and does not solidify after.... So maybe it's about ratios and how well you blend it before ....whatever procedure you prefer?0

I use a stick blender, and I get a foam on top, no oil slick.
Also, for "on the go" I got a blender ball off of ebay. Cost me like $1. I use an Avex flask, put my coffee and butter in there at work and just shake it up, works brilliantly.0 -
I'm glad I see some comments about immersion blenders actually working as I have one on the way from Amazon since every single plastic cup that came with my little blender has developed cracks in them that create a fun hot coffee gun that takes my eye out with every use. I don't think they were intended for hot beverages and certainly not for dishwashers contrary to the box label.
OP, if you are getting the ingredients incorporated and have a foam on top then you probably don't need to blend it. Sounds like the former is taking care of it for you.0 -

The coffe is hot, I dump the hot coffee and the coconut oil and whatever else I want in it into my vitamix and blend until frothy, then I dump that over ice0 -

Same here. I prefer it iced rather than hot. Just blend all together then pour over ice.0 -
I've almost survived the day. I'm a little headachy but I'm drinking lots of water and broth did help!0

I use an ancient immersion blender that is built like a tank for my BPC. I make it in a big glass jar then pour it into my mug. It does the trick and is easier to clean up afterwards. I rarely use the real blender anymore. I'd break it out only if all of you come over for BPC I guess !0
