Maryanne--Aging brings its issues as well as accidents. Young people can have accidents. Often people don't think about that when buying a house. Ease of access is important. I had a cousin, who along with DH, developed problems that prevented them from climbing very steep stairs to the upper floor where bedrooms and bath were located. The lower floor had a small living room, dining room and kitchen. They had to convert the garage which adjoined the house into acceptable place for a bedroom and a bath. I'm fortunate in that the back entrance is easy to navigate; I rarely use the front entrance.0

Our neighbor built a small room onto the back of her house to be a laundry room when she couldn't do the stairs any more. We almost never see her outside now. I wonder sometimes how long it will be until they move her in with one of her kids.
I believe these houses were intended to have a "master bedroom" on the first floor. What we use as our office. The upstairs is all one big room. No way both parents and kids were intended to sleep up there. If we had to, we could move the "office" out and sleep on this floor. It wouldn't be easy; too much "stuff"; but it could be done. I suspect instead we'd get at least a chair lift up to the second floor and maybe one to the basement.
Now that doctors are no longer freely prescribing osteoporosis drugs, people our age I would think would have more issues. I get the bone density test every year but sometimes I wonder why since the drugs have fallen out of favor.0 -
Our house has the master bed and bath downstairs and the laundry room is there too, so at least that's not a problem. However, the doorways are standard width, so getting the wheelchair through them is tight. My ortho doc prescribed a scooter for me and so far, that is proving a little easier to navigate with in some areas. My surgery will be a week from Friday because he wants to wait for some of the swelling to go down first. It's a day surgery, so hopefully the recovery won't be too awful. I think he said I might be in a boot in a month or so and that will be nice because it can be removed for showering, etc. for now, I'm enjoying my hydrocodone haze and lots of time on the couch while I watch DH do all the housework and fetch and carry for me. He got a little surly a while ago when I asked him to peel some grapes for me, but he's over it now, lol!0

Pam--I hope the surgery goes well. In the meantime, relax and let DH pamper you.
I'm off to the city today. My hair is overdue for a trim and color. Afterwards, I am having a late lunch with a friend who is having hip replacement surgery on January 11. He has to have a hospital bed. He has a very small house, so he needs to have some of the furniture taken out of his TV room (second bedroom converted) so he can put the bed in there.0 -
DH remembers all too well taking care of me and I know he never wants to do it again. He watches me like a hawk when I carry something down the stairs. Obsesses over my vaccinations until he worries himself silly. Etc. Like you can actually prevent every single thing that could happen from happening.

We have a stair lift installed when MIL lived with us. DH thought about removing it after she died and I reminded him we were getting older ourselves. Our main living area is on the second floor. I use it myself when my knee acts up and it comes in handy to send groceries upstairs and packages downstairs. It was well worth the expense.0

Helene--You made a great decision to keep the lift installed.
Sometime today, I'll start a new thread for 2016.0 -
Happy 2016 everyone! Here's hoping for good things.
I'm not much for New Year's resolutions but I've got to get back on track.
Some things are SO predictable. I see QVC has Marie Osmond selling some sort of cheap exercise band and the "Marie's favorites" NS lunches is prominently featured.
