RNY and liver biopsy

I did my preop with my dr yesterday and he told me they would be doing a liver biopsy when they do my RNY because of my fatty liver. They will be checking for non alcoholic cirrhosis. Is this common? Depending on the grade, I may have to go to a GI Doctor. I know losing weight will help tremendously, just wondering did anyone else go through this.

I didn't go through this as part of my surgery, but I did have to get a liver biopsy due to high liver enzyme levels that my doctor noticed from bloodwork from a routine physical. It was to determine whether or not it was from fatty liver, but I did end up being diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis (non alcoholic). I have a GI I see regularly and it's under control. Since it's genetic, losing weight doesn't specifically help this condition, but losing weight and having good general health over all only helps in the long run. If you have any questions about it, let me know!

I had a liver biopsy done during surgery but it was for a clinical trial on fatty liver disease.

garber6th, thanks for the input. They are suspecting the non alcoholic cirrhosis because of the high liver enzyme levels for me as well. I've had trouble in the past with this, but have never been actually diagnosed. It's good to know there is someone I can go to if I have questions after the results. Thanks to you as well vikki!
