dairy

I haven't seen many people mention cutting out dairy, but wondering if anyone has experienced trouble with weight loss, bloating, or anything else negative due to dairy. I'm pretty sure I've read in other non-low carb diet articles about cutting out dairy and that helping with stuff. I probably average 1-2 tblspns heavy whipping cream a day, I eat cheese just about every day, and I guess butter counts and I have that almost daily. Not dairy milk or yogurt though since they are so carby. Anyone cut all this stuff out and experience positive results? If I cut out all dairy I'd pretty much be full paleo I think. I've had a bit of sour cream since starting keto and have a full 8 oz package of cream cheese every 1-2 weeks too.

There was more of a discussion on this a while back, but I don't have the link, but yes, several folks here have cut out dairy.
Cutting out butter isn't as critical to most, as it has almost no whey or casein, if I remember right. Ghee is essentially a clarified form of butter that's considered to be Paleo friendly.
I read a theory on this a while back... Breastmilk in humans (and cows) is intended to help the infant to gain weight rapidly to survive, etc. We take the same milk and use it many forms. We are said to be the only species who consumes the milk of other species... So why would we essentially want to include "nature's weight gainer" in our diets? Because we like the taste.
I've not been brave enough to take this leap yet, but I've been told nutritional yeast in small amounts mimics the sharpness and bite of hard cheese, ghee can be used for butter, coconut/almond milks and creams can be used in place of heavy cream (I think @Sunny_Bunny_ uses a blended milk she loves). Not sure of "paleo" type subs for yogurt or cream cheese, but the others, as with most things low carb, there are always substitutes.0 -
Hard cheese. A bit of butter. Small amounts of heavy whipping cream.
That seems to not cause me problems.
Pay attention to your body. Experiment carefully.
Good luck!0 -
I cut out dairy, when I cut out carbs. I've had so many positive effects & I'm not sure from which! So I'm content to stay this way. Once in a while I put a small amount of feta on something - if I'm cooking something Greek. (A very small amount adds a lot of flavor.)0

I cut dairy at first but then added it back. When my pain levels did not rise I just stayed on dairy which makes up about 700 of my 2600-3000 daily calories.
Cheese, cottage cheese and heavy whipping cream is my main dairy sources. I will do half and half but the volume that I use will really dent my ketone levels.
As others have stated it can depend on each person.
With the cause of obesity being brain inflammation due to a leaking gut per some sources I think after we heal our leaking gut (main reason I do 5 tablespoons of coconut oil daily) we can better handle foods that once we could not.0 -

^^ This is why I'm adding back in Kombucha daily! I'm not such a fan of other fermented products, but Kombucha makes me feel great.0 -
We cut out milk years ago at my house, and we dropped yogourt a few months ago. I eat butter daily, use varying amounts of HWC, and limit cheese to no more than 1 ounce daily. But I have great weight loss results when I limit dairy to just butter.0

I have hwc, butter, and cheese pretty much daily. I don't plan to cut it at this time because honestly I need those things to make this diet a lifestyle for me. Years ago I experimented with paleo because I have a chiari malformation and one of the main neurosurgeons recommends trying the diet before getting surgery. I did not see any positive effects and in fact I seem to have a weird allergic reaction to both almond milk and coconut milk in coffee (yet not by themselves, go figure). Giving up coffee or drinking it black is not an option I'm interested in pursuing so dairy it is! lol0

I'm a cheese addict and I was able to go Keto cause I could have cheese. I do find I need extra fibre to replace the bulk that the old carbs gave me. I have cut back on milk and regular yogurt.0

1/2 cup heavy cream & 3 Tbs salted butter daily works fine for me.
I love cheese but can only have a little now & then. Might as well eat cement.

Cheat food only (cheese fat bombs)...or in instances of traveling (whey).
Digestion is not so great for adults vs say infants as the GI tract becomes more acidic after infancy (less adapted to digest dairy).0 -
When I first started, I had zero dairy. Now I eat a little bit of cheese (maybe 3-4 oz a week), some HWC if I do low carb baking and it calls for it (so a little bit once a month), and a little butter here and there (maybe a total of 3 Tbsp a week). Since adding in cheese, I've noticed a slower weight loss but that could also have to do with the fact that I've lost the majority of my "bulk" already and only have a few spare pounds left. I say try cutting it out if you think it might be beneficial but don't drive yourself crazy over it - if your body revolts or you just hate life without dairy, add it back and don't sweat it!0

I eat lots of cheese and HWC in smaller amounts, just to keep calories down though.
@KnitOrMiss mentioned the milk blend I use. It's coconut almond milk blend by Califia Farms. It's very tasty! Much more than any other non dairy milk I've ever had. It's not creamy but I have used it in coffee later in the day when I didn't have many calories available and it's great to make iced coffee with. 6 oz. coffee and 4 oz. milk with some Davinci or Torani syrup. Yuuuuuummmmy!0 -
I'm definitely thinking about cutting it out. Not sure if I will full-time.
I'm pro-soy milk.0 -
I adore dairy foods, but they stall me out. My blood sugar rises on them (particularly cheese) and I drop out of ketosis quickly. I love cream too, but overeat it far too easily. I'm not a fan of the taste of the common keto milk substitutes so have just given them a miss. Definitely a YMMV thing though.0

Make sure to keep an eye on your hormones. Soy can wreak havoc there. For me, it also causes gastro distress... I know that's not everyone. You're young enough that monitoring is all I'd do, just to make sure there are no blips to throw you off later!0
