Sodium

I don't have a proper computer at home right now, so I haven't been able to do as much research as I would like. I've increased my number for sodium to 3000. Except for being overweight I'm in good health, excellent blood pressure, no medications or sodium restrictions.

What is the average sodium intake for low carb diets? Is 3000 ok? I realize this may be subjective.

I consider 2000 min and 3000 max but do not sweat the numbers unless I have concerns.

I think between 3000 - 5000 is fine as long as you're not having low sodium symptoms.

Phinney and Volek say 5000 mg. I struggle to get even close to that, so usually I just choke down enough salt to reduce symptoms. The more carbs you eat, the less ketones you dump, and the less sodium you need to replenish, so if you get bored eating too much salt, you can increase your carbs instead. :)

I'm generally around 5000 during adaption or readaption, 3000 mg during normal execution.

Holy crap! I need to pay closer attention to this for sure. I've only been going Low Carb for a week and haven't paid attention to sodium. I just checked and for the day I'm at 619mg. I'm not sure what to do. So far I haven't noticed any negative consequences but perhaps that is only a matter of time. I'd sure appreciate any advice on how to get enough sodium and/or what are the negative impacts from not consuming enough.

I was getting a bad headache. Everyone told me I needed more sodium & it helped a lot.

You may potentially experience headaches, weakness, dizziness, etc. Best advice: SALT EVERYTHING YOU CAN!! lol Seriously. :) Buy the cheap ram noodle packs (5 for $1.00 at the .99 cent store), then toss the noodles and mix up and drink the broth flavor packet 1-2 times per day. It's high in sodium.
