In a 3 week experiment, Sam Feltham consumed on average, 5794 calories daily, following a LCHF diet (less than 10% of calories from carbohydrates).
According to over-simplified calorie counting, energy expenditure isn’t affected by what you eat. All excess calories you eat will then lead to weight gain. If this were true Feltham would have gained 16.5 lbs (7.5 kg) during the three weeks, but in reality he only gained 3.5 lbs (1.7 kg).
AND his waist measurement decreased by 3 cm.
Fascinating stuff.

On my phone right now, but was the guy lifting weights or doing any kind of exercise?
If he was lifting then he should have put on some extreme muscle mass...
cant see myself eating 5k+calories on a high fat low carb diet... Couldnt imagine the amount of evoo shots I would need to take...0 -
He details his menu and exercise here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/sam-feltham/my-5000-calorie-experiment_b_3350869.htmlFor those of you that are sceptical and are thinking that I'm just going to the gym all day here is what my calorie expenditure looks like. To calculate my calorie expenditure I'm using the revised version of the Harris-Benedict equation by Roza and Shizgal in 1984:
BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 x weight in kg) + (4.799 x height in cm) - (5.677 x age in years)
Based on my starting mean weight, 85.6kg, that would make my BMR, calories burned at rest, a steady 1,973 calories. Once you have this number you can use the following list to workout your daily calorie expenditure:
- Little to No Exercise (BMR x 1.2) = 2,368
- Light Exercise, 1-3 days per week (BMR x 1.375) = 2,713
- Moderate Exercise, 3-5 days per week (BMR x 1.55) = 3,058
- Heavy Exercise, 6-7 days per week (BMR x 1.725) = 3,403
- Very Heavy Exercise, twice per day (BMR x 1.9) = 3,749
I cycle 3 times a week for 40 minutes along with 3 strength training sessions that last 4 minutes. This puts me in the moderate exercise category making my daily calorie expenditure 3,058!
My calorie intake each day is as follows:
Breakfast
15g of coconut oil; 135 calories, Carbohydrate=0g, Fat= 15g, Protein=0g

My SO has been adding in some higher calorie days (much higher than the MFP recommendations). For example: He ate 2,916 on Sunday (part of which was 22.24 ounces of steak), 2,780 on Monday ... and today he hit the lowest weight he's been since we started two years ago. He's doing low carb. of course. I just sent him a link to this post. Other than the moving around at work, the only exercise he does right now is jog a continuous mile (10 minute mile) a few times a week. I'll be interested to see what happens when we start lifting again.0

I'm excited to see an update is coming to this story! Sam Feltham will now be doing the same 21 day n=1 experiment that he previously did with LCHF, but this time following a LF-HC diet.In this latest experiment I'll be eating 5,500 calories of "heart healthy" carbohydrates (namely cereal, bread and pasta) a day for 21 days in comparison to my last experiment where I ate 5,794 calories a day of a real food low carb high fat diet, in which I lost 3cm from my waist and put on 1.3kg in weight despite a 56,654 calorie surplus that should have seen me at 7.3kg heavier. Along with a BodPod test I'll be getting a full blood profile test which will show me everything from cholesterol to liver function. I will be getting these two tests done again at the end to see the difference and then I will follow our new nutrition plan Eat The Fat for 21 days at my maintenance calories to see what happens to my body composition as well as my blood profile. On Sunday I will be posting my introductory video and blog with what I will be eating daily and my BodPod results. Finally, just like last time I will be doing a daily video diary for the whole 6 weeks plus tracking my weight and waist on my blog and YouTube channel which you can subscribe too right here as well as watching my last experiment
So with the LC-HF diet, he lost 3 cm off his waist, and gained 1.3 kg (less than 3 pounds). It'll be great to see how he fares on the Low Fat, High Carb diet.0 -
Interesting... anxious to know the results!0

Bumping to keep this active because the low fat-high carb diet is on! He is 8 days in..
He is currently doing a "processed" carbs diet and in January, he will be doing a "clean" carb diet. e.g rice/oats etc.0 -
That's amazing! You should cross post this. Now I feel so much better about the days I go over calories lol.0

He's halfway thru, on day 10.

On LC-HF in 21 days he gained less than 3 lbs, and lost 3 cm on his waist.0 -
So it's really not just cals in cals out? *shocked face*0

Such an awesome post. I'll definitely read through this information after work today. Off to cook some beef and broccoli. :-)0
