There is somewhere online you can get a free one, but the strips are more expensive. I don't remember exactly which ones were recommended here for cost, but there are bundles you can get on Amazon and such where you get 3 things of strips with a meter that are a huge savings over ongoing costs for strips... Hopefully someone will have the info on that post! It's months ago.

I use a ReliOn meter & strips. Very cheap. $16. for the meter, $9. for 50 strips.

I use FreeStyle Precision. Not the cheapest but very accurate and the same monitor can use glucose and ketones strips.

In Europe you can usually get the monitor for free (search for offers in your country) and sometimes you also get the strips from NHS, either free or for a fraction of cost. If you're diabetic it may be worth asking your doctor for a prescription.

Here's a link to a few offers for free meters.

Most of them offer a savings card to pay a $15 copay at pharmacy for 50 test strips.

This meter is one I have that tests blood ketones too. It's free when you buy test strips and comes with a savings card for $15 copay also.

Word to the wise, if you are paying out of pocket, go with the least costly test strips first (before looking at a glucometer). CVS has a really cheap glucometer with inexpensive test strips (green & black monitor)...test strips are so cheap they aren't even kept in the pharmacy due to theft threat. The instruction manual has a phone # you can call to get free control solution to calibrate the meter. Overall cost is around 40$ for glucometer, lancing device, lancets, & 1 box of test strips.

The only thing I don't care for about this model is the difficulty in getting blood samples to absorb into the test strip...might need more blood than other glucometers (can be a bit messy & cumbersome for those fearful of blood & having to "milk" finger capillaries)
